okay, so the "provocative" bit was a ploy to get you here. i have 3 questions:

1) is there a better lefty-friendly production folder for the same price, and if so, make & model & reasons please.. i'm at that point of narrowing down what i've narrowed down, and the chinook 2 has all the goodies i like (not an axis lock, lefty-friendly, nice pronounced guard/choil, blade at least 3.5", high-end stainless steel, cheap enough to not feel bad about roughing it up on a hard-use basis)

2) any issues with bladeplay that you've experienced? apparently this was a minor concern with the chinook 1 & other spydies as well.

3) where can i get the best deal on a brand-new one (and other factory bangers as well)?

thanks in advance for your feedback, knifeknuts.

Alan,

Go over to 'tactical' and scroll back a week or two. There was a discussion, and with all things tactical, it degraded into a cat-fight. All too often lately.

In summary, I opined it was 'odd looking' and I preferred the SOG Tomcat. Brownie won me over with a debate and some actual use reports, then ten ninja jumped out, I saw the flash of steel, I grabbed my teddy bear and split.

I just received a Chinook II as part of a passaround today and I'm impressed. Very solid knife with a lot of adaptability (ambidextrous lock and 4 choices for positioning the pocket clip) I'm not a lefty but it would work just as well for a lefty as a righty so....

The knife had a tiny bit of blade play out of the box, but a quick adjustment of the pivot screw had the blade play gone while still being very smooth and easy to open.

Don't know about the best deal but check NewGraham, they are great to deal with and always seem to have excellent prices. That is where I would get one....and I just may have too now that I've had the chance to handle one!

Those are my favorite places to oggle or buy Spyderco at great prices. You may also look into Buck Strider pieces and Al Mar's SERE 2000. Most of the new Buck Striders have right-handed liner locks, but ambidextrous pocket clips. I think the Al Mar SERE 2000 does, too. Custom maker Dick Atkinson may also have some lockbacks and liner locks that will fit your bill for a lefty-friendly folder capable of self-defense (though you may have to wait for one with a stab-safe choil ;) ).

That's about all I can think of.

I haven't handled the Chinook II yet but based on the Chinook I that I have had a chance to play with I have ordered some for my new store, can't wait for them to arrive.

I sympathize with you. May father is left handed and so is one of my sons. getting knives for them is somewaht challenging. I am, quite frankly, surprised at just how little true choices there are for lefty's. I believe most of us rightys take that for granted.

The Chinook II is an awesome knife. Excellent quality. Spyderco drilled and tapped both sidees of the knife for the pocket clip. This goes a long way in making it very lefty friendly.

I had heard some complaints about bladeplay on the original Chinook. I have a Chinook II that has no bladeplay at all, in any direction. I was also amazed at how smoothly it opens for a lockback.
