Chinook or Manix

If ruggedness and durability is the goal, which would you choose? Is there another Spyderco folder I should consider given my objective? This will be my first Spyderco folder so I want to do it right.

I would pick the Manix.

The are basically the same knife other than the blade shape. One of the Chinooks is hollow ground, which is going to be weaker than the full flat grind on the other Chinook and the Manix. So let's just compare the flat ground ones.

The Manix has a leaf-shaped blade. Or a spear point. Whatever you want to call it. The Chinook has the clip point. The Manix tip has more meat to it. It will be stronger.

The Chinook is actually significantly thicker at the tip than the Manix is spine thickness wise. This applies to the hollow gorund version, though. I'd imagine they'd be similar in thickness, both flat ground.

To me, technicalities aside, they are the same as far as toughness goes. The blade shape is what should matter in choosing between the two. I happen to think the handle is nicer feeling and the blade shape is better looking on the Chinook II. Both are useful bladeshapes. I like having more tip, though.

Have own both, must choose one: Manix.

Silly question to choose one, cuz you will end up owning both. Trust me on this!

My suggestion will actually be, buy both the sametime will save you on shipping. I have not yet personally met anyone who owns one but not the other.

Both are very good knives. I'm a fan of the Chinook, it is one of my favorite folders. Owning both I can say they are both excellent knives. Get Both. If you can't, try to handle them first. Best of luck on such a hard decision.

Why get both, they are almost the same knife??? I like my Manix and use it hard around my property. What impresses me most is the ergos and the hardness of Spyderco's Golden CO S30V.

I was gonna say that the chinook had a thicker tip (spine) too, but I wasn't sure as I don't have them to compare. Personally, I would go for the chinook. Either blade. It's one of my favorites. No need to get em both. They are pretty damn similar.

I am not saying the Manix has a thicker tip. I am saying the shape of the tip has more meat. It is a drop point, basically. The Chinook is a deeply clipped point. The point itself is more needle like on the Chinook. I could be wrong as to which is actually stronger, but the shape certainly suggests to me that the Manix tip is stronger overall.

BTW I am not claiming to be an expert.

I agree a drop point is stronger however I think the Chinook's edge more than makes up for that. In fact, in my experience I have found the Chinooks tip stronger however, I do not pry very much. I might partial because the Chinook is one of my favorite knives, I find that between the clip point, thick spine and hollow grind it is a great knife for piercing, prying and slicing. But don't get me wrong I love the manix I just finding it oriented more toward one task, slicing.

EDIT: Just to be clear I didn't break any tips. I just found that with out sharpening the tip of the Chinook it will definately outlast the Manix. And in longterm use seems to keep its out of the box tip.

Depends on what you will use it for. I like the Chinook because of the clip-point, although I end-up using a drop point more, but I still love the way the Chinook looks. It is one of the best looking knives that I have ever seen.

Personally, my choice would be very difficult. They're both constructed to be incredibly sturdy, and will both perform very well.
I think the Chinook looks funny, and the point (being so drastically clipped) is way above the "center line" when you're holding the knife. That being said, it'd make an excellent hunting knife since it's got so much belly.
For utility work, I like the FULLY flat-ground blade of the Manix a little better than the PARTIAL flat grind of the Chinook. Doesn't make much difference, though.
Essentially, it'd boil down to this: I already have a great skinning knife for when I hunt, and I prefer a fixed-blade for that purpose anyway. So, I'd get the one geared more toward general utility (imo): the Manix. The blade "goes to point" readily, meaning that when it's held in the hand, it's very natural to "feel" where the tip of the blade is; it's more of an extension of the hand/arm.

I agree with you wuyeah. I love Chinook but I'm looking for Manix too. Cheers.

and and I'm quite happy with it. The chinook tip would probably be more likely to break if you dropped it on concrete or used it for prying, but if you use it for cutting I would prefer the Chinook. With that said I wish that I could afford to buy both.

I own both and the Manix is the preferred one between the two. I just feel more comfortable with the broader blade of the Manix.

Well,

The "stock" answer is to buy both!

I do have both of these knives and find that the Manix is the one that I carry more than the Chinook.
