If ruggedness and durability is the goal, which would you choose? Is there another Spyderco folder I should consider given my objective? This will be my first Spyderco folder so I want to do it right.

My vote is for the Manix, but what will you using the knife for? The Military is a little bit longer, but not as wide/bulky as the Manix, I found it easier to carry. All three are built like tanks.

Chinook or Manix? ;)

i was also in a similar situation when i was chosing my first spyderco knife. The manix has a better blade for utility work while the chinook would be better for self defense.

They are both similar in size, strength, appearance, etc. so choose based on what it will be used for.

My first spyderco was a manix :)

If you decide on the Chinook, be aware that the current release is the Chinook II.

I would say both are pretty equally sturdy. I haven't seen the new flat ground Chinook so I don't know how the things stand right now, but between the Chinook II and the Manix, I would give the Chinook the nod as far as tip strength goes, the rest is the same.

I was very surprised how much I liked the lines of the Chinook. The Chinook has a lot of appeal to me, something I wouldn't have guessed from pictures, but the blade shape of the Manix I find more useful, and the ergos on the Manix I find also to be better (not surprising since the Manix has the best ergos of any knife I have ever held). So overall my choice would be and is the Manix.

But both are so close that you really have to make a personal decision. You can go solely by appeal since "ruggedness and durability" is either way not an issue. They are based on the same construction and have both long taken their places among the strongest folders on the market.

Not sure about the full sized Manix, but I have a Chinook (I) and a Mini Manix, and I will soon be selling or trading the mini. It never gets carried.

My Chinook I could be the most rugged, heaviest-duty folder I've ever owned. The only other folder that I have that competes with it for pocket time is my Buck Strider 880 spear point.

Hey eric not to get off topic too much but are there are any more drug raids going on up there?

as soon as i get a job i`m buying a manix . if theres so many threads about it it must be a sick knife

Both blades are super quality but for a broad spectrum of cutting chores I would go with the Manix hands down. Now don't get me wrong because the Chinook I, II & III are all great blades and the III is the newer flat grind but I consider the Chinook to be more of a job specific type blade.

If you want dependability and versatility then it's a slam dunk>> go with the Manix. Now if you are going to use it as a camping/backpacking knife I have a combo edge Manix I have put aside for that purpose alone. But I'm one of the weird guys who likes combo edges :o

For general utility, it's hard to beat the leaf blade Manix. But the Chinook does have that major bowie factor going on, which I am beginning to find very appealing.

They are both tanks, so maybe you should buy according to what you have. In my case, I have a few leaf blades, so I would go for the Chinnok.

Which would better suit your needs, and your arsenal variety?

Good luck on your decision, it's not an easy one!

BTW, have you looked at the 83 Manix, or Lil Temp? Size probably isn't an issue for you, but these knives pack the power of a tank in a smaller package.;)

bugger it , buy both of them i say , two knives are better then one , and you won`t have to choose!

SirGalant and others may have the best idea, i.e., but them both. The more I consider them, the more I consider them. I also like the looks of the Li'l Temerance so I am getting a severe migraine. I'd involve my wife in the decision but she would beat me with a Louisville Slugger which would not be good.

Haven't been any lately (at least not big enough to make news.) I'd love to see the authorities come down like a hammer on the areas within the city that are starting to get bad, as well as the rural meth labs.

It's too bad--for a city of the size of Watertown (~20,000) you would think the police could clean out the trash rather quickly. I guess it isn't 1955 anymore.

They're right, I have a chinook II and the manix just keeps popping into my head. Now I feel as though I need one. they're both built like tanks, I'd say get both. I aim to carry the manix and the chinook together. With that edc, I think all the bases are covered.

I have one of the new flat grind Chinook II's and a Mini-Manix and you really do need both. :D

I've answered this question so many times. I'm just going to go with the short version from now on: Chinook.
