I picked up a Chinook this past weekend and really like it,however there is a mod I`ve been thinking about doing.I would like to polish the G-10 scales. The problem is,the pivot pin sticks just a bit above the scales and since they can`t be removed from the knife, are there any issues involved with removal of the pivot pin?I don`t want to sand the top off the left side of the pivot pin when I sand the G-10.Has anyone done a similar mod?Your opinions on the mod will be appreciated.

Why would you polish the scales? It seems to me that the result would be more difficult to hang on to in the wet or if you are using it in a bloody situation, such as game cleaning. The point of the texturing of the scales is traction.

Why polish the scales?Because I`d kinda like a gussied up Chinook.Besides,I don`t think grip would be too severely compromised.IMHO,knife retention is more an issue of handle shape then choice of scale material.

Carver,

Having just become the excited and enthusiastic owner of a Chinook myself, I think I understand perfectly why you might want to do this. I was amazed at the fit and finish of the Chinook once I took possesion of mine last week. It is far more "beautiful" than I anticipated it would be. I suppose because it's known as such a strong, tough knife that perhaps I didn't expect it to be so "rich" looking. It truly is, and so I think that with the G-10 scales more highly polished it could look even better. Let me know how yours turns out, if you decide to do this. Maybe post a picture if you have the capability?

I wouldn't be concerned about the grippability of the knife after having done this, as it's still going to have "grabby" G-10 on the handle.

I don't think you'd encounter any problems completely removing the pivot pin on the Chinook. That's not the case with all knives though; removing the pivot pin on the eccentric pivot liner lockers is a little tricky.

That sounds like a great idea to refinish the Chinook's handle. Not only would it look good, but it would also make the knife easier to draw. I've found that the knife tears up my pockets a bit just because it's so thick. I'd love to see something like polished linen Micarta scales on the Chinook.

G-10 doesn't seem to take a fine polish as well as Micarta does though. I buffed the G-10 handles of a Military with rouge and it didn't quite work out: it never looked really good and it was too hard and slippery. I took it back up to around 400 grit and I'm pretty happy with that finish. It looks nice, and although it's still smooth, there's a little bit of traction.
