The Chinook II is a refinement of the original. I think it looks much better. Some people mentioned blade play in the original Chinook. Has the lock been refined as well?

Every part of the model was re-designed and re-engineered.

should be as close to perfect as possible.

Thanks for the reply sir. I didn't mean to imply that the lock was questionable on the original. I have never heard of a lock failure on it.

What should the lock strength be on the new version? Wasn't it tested to 500 lbs on the original?

Dennis,

I for one much prefer the appearance original style Chinook. However, I have been concerned about some of the stories I've heard about vertical blade play with these models. Recently though, a dealer I spoke to described how they hadn't seen one sample with detectable blade play for quite awhile. This made me think that perhaps Spyderco has done something to "tighten up" the original models. In any case, I have one on order. We'll see how it is when it arrives.

Nope, I just got one (it was on back-order forever) with a date on the box of 11-18-02. It has the vertical blade-play. I'm not worried about it though. There is no side to side play and it locks up like the proverbial bank vault. Most people would never notice the play, you really have to look for it.

This "blade-play" is NOT indicative of an impending lock failure, that bar has to go deep to unlock. The Chinook is one of the last Spydies that will fail on you. Having said all this, I would prefer it to have no play also, but I'm not worried about it.
