Chinook vs. Chinook II

I'm new around here and just have a couple of questions.

1) Are there s30v examples of the original chinook as suggested in this thread? If so, where might I find one?

2) What are the advantages of the Chinook II's revised blade profile? Mainly I like the looks of the original better, but I'd be happy to be converted to the Chinook II's camp in order to save myself the trouble of hunting down an original in s30v, if they even exist.

Please excuse me if these questions have already been covered and thanks for your help.

The Chinook 1 is in 440V but towards the end of production they were produced with S30V blades.

It would be safer to call the dealer and have them check for you.

I have the first Chinook with S30V.

My local dealer here in western Canada had a plain edge, old style Chinook in S30V acouple weeks ago when I was there. They are called "Milarm" and have a website under that name:

I don't know if the new Chinook blade style offers any real advantages, but I prefer the looks of the old model also.

Chinook II hasn't started to ship yet. S30V Chinook and old stock 440V Chinooks are all that is available.

Thanks for the quick and informative replies. It turns out that my wife prefers the looks of the new model, so that's probably what it's going to be for me:). Of course, I reserve the right to pick up a secondhand gen 1 Chinook down the road should one come available.

Though the question of which to purchase first has been settled, I'd still like to know the advantages of the new blade profile. It seems safe to assume that there are advantages considering the design effort that has been going into some of these latest Spyderco offerings.

Is November still the anticipated date of delivery?

Based on comparing the catalog specs and illustrations, here is what I come up with. The blade length and thickness and the hole diameter are the same on both. The CII seems to have a much less pronounced false edge, more of a "hump" in the blade over the hole (which in turn gives it a bit of a thumb ramp), and a softer transition between the false edge and the rest of the spine. It also appears to have the hole place a bit closer to the rear of the blade. I've seen some threads where folks said the Chinook was a bit hard to open, if that was because the original required too much reach for the average thumb, then the shorter throw should help, if it was due to a strong lock spring, then we just have to hope the CII has a weaker one. All that being said, the fact that it is a lockback and FULL AMBI is enough to make me want one.

From the pictures, the Chinook II seems more functional becuase of the lower tip, but then the original Chinook looks like one mean bowie!

The Chinook II is also a couple ounces lighter, but that wasn't changed in the stats.

Thanks all for the info. From what I can gather, the primary differences are weight, choil, thumb ramp, and ambi clip. Since the heft is one of the things that attracted me to the Chinook, I went ahead and ordered an original in S30V. Thanks again for the assistance.
