Chipped blade

Lent my khukri to my dad (he thought it looked cool and he wanted to clear some brush) and he managed to whack a tree that had chicken wire wrapped around it. Two chips on the blade (I'll post pictures tomorrow if I can). How can I fix this? I don't have a grinding wheel and I don't want to ruin the khukri, and I don't want to try to reprofile an appleseed grind in any case.

The only way I know to fix a chipped blade is to remove some steel so I don't think you are going to have much of a choice but to re-profile the blade.

Is it really chipped or a dinged?

Because if dinged, some one here told me it could be reformed. Don't try to grind it yet. Wait for more experienced guys to comment on the best way to fix it.

If it's rolled over you might be able to burnish or tap it straight (although i'm guessing the steel is gone, not rolled, given the hardness of HI sweet spots).
If it's chipped out, you just need to grind it out.
I they're not huge you don't have to do it all at once-regular sharpening will eventually get them out.
( I get it, though, if looking at them makes ya nuts)

Even if the edge is bent or rolled unless it is very minor the metal has been stretched and and made weak. If you bend it back it will never be as strong as original. Post a photo.

Dings and chips can happen. Unless it just really bugs you, I'd leave them be. Lotta good steel around them that would be wasted.

what steely said, if you keep a good edge on it, no reason to worry about chips and bends as long as it still works like it should for the purposes you need--

Thanks to all of you. I'm going to leave it as is and just sharpen it as usual. Deal with it that way.

Good call, Alec, IMO.
One of my most used khuks is a 12 3/4" AK that I put two nice nicks at the sweet spot. AND honestly it cuts the thick sisal twine and hemp rope we work with like no other, using a draw cut. I'm almost happy the nicks are there if not for the reminder that I wasn't paying close enough attention to the nails imbedded into the logs.

Please let us know how it goes and khuk safe,

:)

Thanks for the update, I'm glad you found a solution. Bummers that it happened.

No one has ever returned a Khukri to me with dings, but I've sure dinged my WWII up a few times in the last ~11 years. The first time or two really hurts, then eventually on a working blade, you may get used to it. Be careful and safe. :)
