Chipped blades

I recently purchased two blades, from two different places. A mora hd carbon and a bear grylls paracord. The mora came with with two noticable chips on the blade. The paracord came with a small funky spot that looks like the grinder held to long. It also had a small chip. I bought the mora to practice sharpining a scandi. I bought the paracord because it was cheap. Are small chips the norm in cheap knives, or did I win the bad luck lottery?

Highly doubt its a chip, most likely a dent, aka a compression. I would also have to guess its very small.

As for the grind on the gerber, all factory knives are sharpened by hand on power equipment such as belt sanders. Very easy to over grind with such tools.

(Me thinking out loud) what's the big deal? You purchased them to practice sharpening right?

No big deal. I had never used a scandi before, got a cheap trial knife. The gerber may be a dent. It is small. The mora is chipped. Flaked . Again not a big deal but I have never seen this on a new knife before. Want to know if this is a regular thing.

On a side note removing a small chip from a scandi grind by hand, wasnt a small task.

I would say it's common on Mora and Opinel as they are ground very thin.
These thin edges often roll on harder wood.
I always resharpen my Mora's before I start to use them in hard work.

For practise a Mora is the perfect choice and You will find it to be serviceable for years to come!
