While batoning some wood for the fire with my trusty RC-6 last night I chipped a decent bit of coating off of the blade. What do you folks think I should do to fix it up? I'm thinking of stripping it all off and polishing the blade/handle up...maybe blue it too?

I'd like to see one blued. That sounds good. Other than that, I'd like it like it is. I always leave my used looking blades used looking. I'm proud of how fct up they look.

Leave it and just go on. Unless you want to strip and polish it.

It's a mark of love.

All of mine are beat up. It's a knife made to be used!

I agree, there are users and there are safe queens and I consider my RATS to be users therefore will leave them scuffed. That said I just got my RC6 the other day and it sure is pretty, damn fine knife.

It's like a really hot chick with a scar on her eyebrow from where it got split during a fight she won. That's HAWT.

Chip off a RAT and you are worried? That's like worrying about driving a rally car on a gravel country road!

Scars from use should be proud. After it's completely stripped, you may consider getting it parked(do it yourself)

I wouldn't leave it chipped. If moisture seeps under the remaining coating, your knife could be rusting and you wouldn't see it.

I hate that tactical spoooge on my knives and would must prefer a bare blade.

If it starts rusting under the coating, it will be releasing the coating as it rusts.

I got my izula in desert tan and I absolutely love it (my Christmas present to my brother, an izula in black arrived today and I know he will share my feelings). I just had a question and it seems that this thread might be the appropriate place to ask it. The coating on my tan izula was bubbled on the inside edge of the ring on the butt of the knife and has subsequently come off exposing the metal underneath. How much of a concern might rust be down the road to the rest of the coating on the handle, or to the metal of the handle itself? Will only a light patina develop (which is fine with me) or might the rust be more severe? I don't really care about the looks, but I just wonder if it might compromise the knife itself of the comfort of the handle in some way. If it was on the blade I wouldn't worry because that could easily be kept oiled or with the frequent use I plan on giving it the rust would be at bay. Should I take special care to inhibit rust, or is it a non-issue. Thanks.

I was into the painted/finished blades for a while. I almost cried at the first scratch on some of them. My best response was to get non finished blades. No scratches no cry. :D

That mark on your Izula is a hanger mark from going through the powder coating process. It shows up a little more on the desert tan and the pink knives we ran through powder than it does on the dark knives. Had to hang them from some place to go through the line. Unfortunately the Izula has no handle so the hanging spot is not covered with a handle screw hole.

OK. Thanks for the explaination Jeff. A good little bit of the metal is exposed along both inside edges. I didn't want to sound like I was complaining because it is barely noticeable and as long as it won't affect the integrity of the knife down the line, (ie badly rusted handle) I'm fine. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays All!

The only thing I would suggest is just cleaning that area every once in a while, especially after heavy use in wet, grimy conditions.

Will do Jeff, thanks. I love this knife so much that I ordered another in od last night from Tom at CRKS. Thanks for making such a great product!

We appreciate yall for supporting the RAT Cutlery line!

Oil or that pseudo oil rust inhibitor stuff(not CLP) works...

...or you can keep it clean and use some paste wax to coat it a little.

Trust me, I LOVE battle scars on my knives. The only reason I want a solution for the chip is that the surface under the coating is rough, and thus more prone to corrosion. Likewise I've heard tell that a blued blade will have less cutting resistance than an epoxy or powder coated one. Not sure if that's true but I figured it's worth a shot!

I in no way blame the chipped finish for it being improperly done, and I view all coatings as consumeable. I just want to refinish it to make maintenence a little more worry-free.

Thanks for making such great knives!
