Hi All

got a sak thats chipped at the tip by previous owner. what should i do? should i reshape it or should i leave it as it is?

thanks

That is one ugly and nasty chip..! I would just leave it as it is ...a serrated blade anyway... correct? I do not think it will be a real problem for you since the blade is serrated anyway.

If it were me I would see if Victorinox would honor the warranty on it. If not I'd pay to have it fixed because it would still probably be cheaper than a whole new knife. If you ground that one down it would take more than a 1/4 of the blade to keep the same geometry.

If I were going to keep it and use it, I would consider sending it back to Victorinox for repair or replacement of that blade. Or I would just use a file and then a stone to turn it into a plain edge, since I'm not overly fond of serrated knives for most uses. That should take only 30 minutes to an hour at most. Just use it as it is while you consider your best course of action.

My son snapped the main blade of a 25 year old SAK. I mailed it to New York just hoping they would fix it. I didn't care if it cost me. They mailed me back stating that since the knife was so old, they couldn't fix it unless it was returned to Switzerland. If I didn't want to wait, they would send me any new model of my choice--no charge. I got the knife back after about 10 weeks with a new blade and every thing else cleaned polished and tuned. No cost except for my initial shipping. A month later he lost it. That was 15 years ago. That knife would have been 40 years old today. Kids!! I shoulda raised pigs. At least I woulda got pork chops. :)

I'd leave it as is myself since it's serrated, that or give it a plain edge tip grinding it off about right here:

You'd only lose a mm or two of tip if you did it like that.

If you send it back to Victorinox they're usually good about replacing it no questions asked.
