HI guys
I used a chipping hammer and forged a small hawk out of it. It's still in progress but I have no idea what the steel might be? Any ideas? I was hopinh it would be something I can heat treat with a torch or forge.

probably 1045, 1050.
We used to repoint em quench em in oil and draw to a bronze color.

what Richard said.

In the old books when thye talk about haveing an pick, or plowshare "sharpened" it was done in the forge. :D

Thanks guys. Any idea for a ballpark temp to start with for tempering? I was guessing around 400ish... Since it's the 10xx series steel could I possibly do a hamon??? How cool would that be on a small hawk...
I need to get some good books on forging. I'm currently waiting for my mini side arm burner to complete my new mini-forge. Then all I need is an anvil or something like one.

350, to 400 is a good place to start. you can always raise the temp, but its hard to lower it. :D
