Chipping on my BK9...

I was looking at my beautiful BK9 the other day and noticed some chipping on the edge and I'm honestly not very familiar with 1095 steel. Is this normal? I haven't done anything too crazy with this knife just chopped down a small tree and cut up some branches. Do you guys ever get any chipping on your Becker knives?

It's not unheard of with 1095 and chopping ,Just sharpen it out . Unless it's really sever it won't even affect performance much really.

Not usually. Maybe some VERY small chips. If I get chips, I just run it through my worksharp. How big are these chips? Pictures would be helpful.

Was the wood hard or knotty? Could it have had nails or other metal in it? Could you have hit a rock?

I've chopped a ton with my 9 and never had any chipping unless I hit a rock.

We need pics of what kind of chips you've got.

I unfortunately chipped my BK9 a couple of times by not seeing the concrete it collided against beforehand. I was fortunate that they were small enough, that a good sanding stone fixed the problem.

pictures? how big? how many? what were you chopping? rocks or nails or ?

Chipping can happen, usually only if you hit dirt/rocks/concrete/etc. Also, sometimes branches and whatnot have dirt/rocks on the outside, and even occasionally rocks grow up inside the grain.

So, if the chips are small, likely something like the above happened. If their large, its possible a knife with a bad heat treat snuck through qc. Most likely the first situation occurred though.

I lent my BK2 to someone, and the chopped into a rock, and a few small chips happened. No biggy, sharpening didn't take long, and its all good now.

Cheers!

Same happened with my 4. I've chopped tons with it, lent it out, got it back with about an inch of tiny chips on the belly near the tip. He swore he only chopped wood. I'm not convinced he didn't hit the ground, I've never really used that part of the blade. Still need to fix it but I'm certain I can take care of it.

Only time I remember a "chip" on any of my beckers is when my bk2 was a little over zealous in splitting a piece of wood. Dang thing sailed through straight to the ground where it contacted a rock. The rock suffered far worse, but the 2 only had a little chip. Heck my 15 was sent sailing across the garage tip first into the concrete garage floor and only suffered tip dulling!

Anyways, if you take a knife and chop into dirt, or dirty wood, glance off and miss, throw it in the dirt, loan it to your cousin Billy Jimmy Bob, etc etc you will probably see some sort of something. 9/10 its not a chip but a small "dent" or "ding". Also might want to check and make sure you dont have a rock or something in your sheath, just a thought... That being said I had a mora chip out all down the edge once from just whittling wood. I think I had taken the edge back a little thin and it was just to unstable, sharpened past them and havent had a problem since. So I'd say sharpen it up, and chop some more see what happens. I have my 9 convexed back fairly thin with a convex "microbevel" around 20 degrees on the edge and it holds an edge really really well.

You are correct sir, mine is more like dents and dings, rolly Polly type, not actual chips. Thank you for pointing that out.

pfffffffffft :)

Yeah, took all of a minute...
But the claim to have been only whackin standing trees is still suspect. Saplings at that. Oh well. He was going through a rough patch and I told him to blow off some steam. It worked. He's my buddy so I wouldn't have held it against him if he'd tried to chop a sidewalk in half. My guess is it was dropped. Our ground around here is about 1 inch of top soil then 6" of sand and rock over clay.

Yeah that's what my chips tend to look like. But a good dual-grit stone takes care of those real fast.

Now go get yourself some dip.
