This review is a long time past due - I promised it to Steve a month ago but various obligations have kept me from the machine as much as usual!
I purchased the first "mini-scimitar" that Steve made. It is the first knife he made completely himself, including heat treating, that he has sold on Bladeforums.
Unfortunately, the day I took these pics w/a borrowed camera I didn't have the belt clip on, but the clip is sized to fit the sheath.
Now - on to the review - obviously, this guy is tiny! I bought this with the intent of having a unique knife that could always be with me but not be noticed until I needed it. It fits the bill wonderfully! I would classify the mini-scimitar as a 2 finger knife - I find it holds well with my forefinger lying alongside the blade, my middle finger curled around the grip, and my ring finger resting in the end cutout. My pinkie pulls against the knot for stability (I've since added a bead).
The knife is differentially tempered, extremely hard on the edge, dead soft on the spine. Steve etched the blade, and in the picture you can see the temper line (interface between the almost black band on the edge and the lighter color of the rest of the knife). I'm not sure of the actual hardness, but would guess at 60 or so. It takes a razor edge, and holds it.
I mostly use this little knife for opening mail/boxes/cutting cheese...you know...everyday little things around the house. Clipped on my belt just above my front left jeans pocket (cross draw) I don't know it's there even when I'm sitting. The sheath Steve provided is excellent! It is minimal in bulk, the clip is tiny, and it holds the blade securely. I carry it all three ways (with clip on belt, clipless in pocket and clipless around neck), and it works flawlessly. I should mention that the finish of the knife does scratch easily from the kydex - but that I don't consider a problem, since I got the knife as a user anyway.
I've already mentioned to steve that this little knife begs for being made in multiples...you know, one plain like this, then one with bone slabs, then one with beaten copper slabs.....and so on!
Whether you like this particular style, or one of his others - Steve makes a real fine product and is a pleasure to work with! I recommend getting in touch with him - Chiro75 here on the forums! He has posts in the For Sale by Maker forum now I believe.
Sorry for the disjointed brevity of this review - typing it up in between tasks here at the office! I'm not sure how long the photopoint pics will be available, but I can email photos directly to anyone interested, and Steve has them as well.
happy cutting!
