Chiruwa Handle Question

Hello everyone!

This week Uncle Bill sent me a most beautiful Chiruwa AK made by Kumar, and I love everything about it. However, the grip just behind the bolster is a wee bit to large for my hand and I would like to sand it down flush with the bolster.

My question is about the scale pins. Are these full diameter all the way through? I will not need to sand them down much (maybe 1/16"?) but I would hate to sand the head off a rivet! I would much rather leave the handle alone than risk doing that.

Any advice?

Thanks and Best Regards to the best bunch of guys on the Net!

I took apart a poor condition blem returned by a customer a couple of years ago. The pins are of a consistent diameter and it's probably ok to sand down.

Dunno if you have to repeen the pins when you're finished to tighen the handle again though.

I asked almost the same question a few days ago. Everyone who replied thought it would be alright. I'm filing down my entire handle on my Chiruwa because it is way to fat compared to all my other Khuks. I've got a ways to go to get it right but so far no problems filing down the pins and handle. Right now I have a little gap on one of the pins but I think it will be alright once I file a little more. If not, I will probably fill in with a little epoxy. However, I also have a relating question for everyone. If you do screw up or want to replace the handle completely with something else what do you use for replacement pins to resecure the handle?

Thanks for the replies! I'll dive in with confidence now, though it will be hard to make that first stroke on these beautiful burl scales.

Cucharadedragon, I looked up your excellent post from 2/2. I should have searched first as this answered my question very well!

Thanks everyone!

Yep, yer good2go.

Replacement pins: Usually brass or copper is nice, as it expands nicely along the length of the rod to compress in the tang holes and often the scales as well.

There are at least six kinds of rivets and many more pin styles that you can use to do the deed. There are some very fancy pin styles available these days as well.

Coval knives catalog is a good place 2C what is out there.
