Hello all,
I'm needing to touch up my cqc7. I'm not new to sharpening knives, however this will be my first attempt at sharpening a chisel grind.
I don't want to re profile the knife so I won't be using my lanskey, instead I'll be using my sharp maker.
So once I set my sharp maker up, do I only use one side as opposed to alternating strokes side to side? Do I progress through my stones (medium, fine, ultra fine) with only hitting the edge side?
If this is the correct way, I'm assuming a burr will form on the flat side. How would I remove that? Stroking the flat side only over and over on the uf rods.
Then follow with a strop to the edge side?
If this is all wrong as far as sharpening the chisel grind, by all means please correct me. Thanks

In my experience, you just change the "ratio" of strokes compared to a normal v edge, doing most of the strokes on the grind side and only a couple on the flat side. :)

You'll also need to find the right angle to hold the knife. Emersons don't usually match up to either the 15 or 20 degree slots, so you have to angle the knife a bit to get the right angle. I use a Sharpie on mine if I'm using a SM. After you finish with the beveled side, a few strokes on a strop or even on the other SM rod should remove the burr. I keep the knife almost flat to the stone when deburring the back side. I raise it just enough to not scrape the coating or put marks in the blade finish.

Yes the angle will not match a sharpmaker. I personally find it easier to hold the rod in hand. I will give the non sharpened side 1 stroke for every 3 to 5 strokes on the sharpened side. Progress through the stones like you normally would and give 1 for 1 when stropping. This gives me really good results. I find that it is easiest for me to sharpen my Emersons than my other knives if I use this method.

Thanks again for the help. Great advice. I felt it necessary to ask before I boogered up one of my favorite blades.

I'd use the first link from RevDevil from the Emerson website. Considering Ernie Emerson has probably sharpened wayyy more chisel ground blades than anyone else on here, haha
