Ok, I have a chisel ground knife that I got in trade. The edge has been sharpened on both sides. Is the only way to set it back to a true chisel grind, is by filing the edge flat? This should bring the back side back to flat correct? Any suggestions on how to do this and the equipment needed would be helpful. By the way the steel is A-2 and hardened around RC 59-61. Thanks for the info in advance.:D

Disassemble the knife. Flat grind the blade up to the pivot tang to remove the existing bevel. Reassemble.

Piece of cake!

Sorry, DGG this is a small neck knife. Are you saying just to sharpen it out? It looks to be a factory grind which puzzels me. My idea was to flaten the edge thus removing the backside bevel which would take no time at all to do. Then re-cut the edge using a Lansky. it would change the blade shape a little. Does it hurt to have a chisel ground knife sharpened on both sides? Thanks DGG you are the man in my book!:D

I am no expert on chisel grinds but I put a small bevel on the flat side of all of mine. I find that this helps edge strength, re-sharpening is easier as you do not have to strop the entire flat, which can remove any makers marks on the blade; and it also helps the knife cut straighter (my knives are used for utility more than anything else). The downside to this method is that it leaves a thicker edge which creates more drag- a negative in some circles where the knife is to be used for very percice cutting or self defence.
Just my thoughts though!

You could flatten the back, which would take awhile and throw the blade into a skew, the easiest way would be to just sharpen the primary edge until it removes the back edge, the would take awhile without power equipment, maybe a hour for a small blade and an x-coarse hone depending on steel and size of the bevel. Lots of chisel ground blades are sharpened on both sides however.

Well, I did it. I took a Dremal and using a very fine sandpaper wheel erased the edge completely back to flat gound. I then took it to work and used a handheld belt grinder and initially formed an edge. I then used my Lansky and formed a 30 degree angle edge and removed the burr on the opposite side using 2000 grit sandpaper. The edge looks fairly good and it is as sharp as Hades. The A-2 steel take a wicked edge! I'll post pics for anyone interested when I get home this evening. Thanks for all the advice.
