This is a sister thread to one I will start soon in knifemaker's sub-forum to get some info for buying and making chisels.

Right now, I'm using cast-off no-name resin handle chisels, like these:

I'm looking for replacements in a few sizes from 1/4"-1", with good steel and the ability to take a pounding. I'll likely save a couple for woodworking (I sometimes restore furniture), but for the most part, I'd like a nice all-around chisel that I wouldn't be afraid to really pound on. I just don't want chisels designed to take only light taps with a wooden mallet.

I am also interested in design and construction of chisels like I have described, so if you have any suggestions or a favorite brand or design, please don't be shy with pictures!

Might get more response over in the Workshop sub forum. Two cherries brand is a god place to start your search, though. Japan Woodworker (now owned by Woodcraft :( ) has a good selection of Japanese chisels and sharpening stones.

Thanks, I had never seen that sub-forum.

I didn't know that about Japan Woodworker, which is sad, Woodcraft really seems to gouge prices wherever they can.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised by it, but then again I'm happy about it. The owners retired and sold the business to keep things going. So far it looks like Woodcraft is keeping things how they were, for now.
