Chitlangi Buttcap Question For Dan Koster

Hi Dan!

Some of the old H.I. buttcaps had a thin brass strip that was soldered to the buttcap...

If you were to rebuild a buttcap and handle, could you do one in 3/16" - 1/4" metal, and would it be best to have a 'cup like buttcap' made to precisely fit the well prepared and carved wood handle? Would it be a good idea to solder metal pegs underneath the buttcap, with precise holes drilled into the handle itself? Seemingly, this would allow for a very stable buttcap, assuming it was also epoxied into place, and the tang peened in well...

I'm hoping the ordered khuk will soon be arriving in Reno. It should be a nice project, and I hope more will follow. Depends on Bura, I guess...! ;)

My name aint Dan , But id say forget the soldered strip, thats the first thing damaged on those that have it.

Pins sound usefull.

I like a nice rounded butt, ;) with the plate shaped to fit over it myself!

On a chit, I would use a 1/8" - 3/16" strip and form it "to shape". Then carefully drill holes through the buttplate into the handle. Probably 2 (one on each side of the tang). Then gently peen the pins to make 'em invisible and smooth edges & polish, etc.

A lot of care would need to be employed to ensure a tight fit-n-finish. But when done, it would be pretty sweet.

If you can't tell already...

I Like Big Butt(plate)s
And I do not lie.....

Hi Spiral...

I definitely would not consider a thin strip around the buttcap. I am more into a solid, one piece construction. I adore well rounded butts myself, Spiral, and married an alarmingly attractive and fit Dominican woman (my ex-secretary :D ).

The Chitlangi's buttplate can be a mere 1/4 inch extension of the rounded wooden handle, or can be purposefully shaped to fit over a well formed woodedn handle, with specially designed appendages to secure it...

I'd prefer the metal bits to be as solid as possible. It'll pay off in the end. It's really not much more in cost. Just more labor (on my part).

Just waiting for GraverTom to solidify his participation, Dan. The cost is what it will be, and your work speaks for itself. We always have options, and I always appreciate your expert input.

Sounds good Dan, I reckon Dan knows his stuff, But think you need to find a graver called Dan to complete the power of the trilogy!

Spiral :)
