Chive or Scallion?

I have been looking into buying one of the Kershaw assisted openers- specifically the Chive or Scallion. And I was just wondering which one you prefer? Each knife has specific features I like, but is one higher in quality?
Thanks!

I have the chive and really like it. Though it is a little small for my big paw of a hand. :) From what I've seen of Kershaw quality (#1 son and I also have a Blackout and my #2 son has a Vapor) either knife would serve you well. I would choose the one that fit my hand the best.

I had a Chive and a Leek with stainless handles. The Chive opened very fast and definitely quicker than the leek. I traded both away because the stainless handles were too slippery, especially problematic on the Chive because it's so small. The Chive blade is long enough for most of my daily tanks, but the handle isn't.

I too have a Chive and a Leek with stainless handles. I like both of them but the Leek fits my hand much better. Get both. Thank me later.

I had purchased the Chive for my father-in-law. He loved the knife & used it daily for about 7 months until he lost it. I had the oportunity to purchase another Chive or a Scallion for the same price & seeing that the Scallion is only 1/4" larger blade & a slightly bigger handle than the Chive, I went with the larger one. Happy to say that he likes this knife better than the Chive simply because it is just a hair bigger & he can grasp it easier. Plus it is small enough where you can either clip it on your pocket or just keep it in your pocket & you probably wouldn't really notice you have it on you.
Both open lightning quick & both have a safety lock.
Your choice.....the Chive is a nice knife, but it is small. The Scallion is just a little bigger & might serve you better.

Hope this helps you out some......

Chive, the rainbows are nice too! If you want a little bigger, go for the leek, the chive seems to small for me and I am not a big guy! Paul

I've been looking into the same thing. Chive/Leek/Scallion.

I elimiated the Leek early because I don't care for the blade shape.

I had a trade-off after that. I wanted the Stainless handle on the Chive with the slightly larger size of the Scallion. See, the Scallion does not have a stainless handle (that I've been able to find).

I think I'll end up with a red scallion because the slightly larger size is good.

I'd get the Scallion. I think it would prove to be more useful in the long run due to it's larger dimensions.

I'll throw my .02 in too. I own two rainbow leeks, and two blackouts. I've handled the chives; The chive is just too small to hold. Even my wife scowled at the chive's size. And we are both small people, at about 5-6 feet.

The leeks are nice, if a bit small. The point and blade shape may not appeal to you, but you'd be shocked at how accurate the configuration can be for scalpel-like applications.

The blackouts are a bit more traditionally droppoints. Ours are serrated. A great emergency/rescue type blade. Oh, yeah: The non-blackened version is called the "Whirlwind", I believe.

The coatings on both are great. The blackouts do admittedly show a scratch now and again. I've had zero scratches on the rainbow, but it is more a dress knife, and has only opened christmas presents and such.

The bigger/weightier the blade, the slower it's going to be. The leeks snap open with a sound like glass, they are that frick'n solid. The blackouts are a bit slower, and with a duller sound, because of the plastic handles. Still faster than heck, but remember that the blackout is set up with only one right-handed thumbstud. The leek is ambi, and also has a "flipper".

I've never handled one, but I think the next generation in size is called "Boa" and "Bump". I think the Bump is being made with a new generation steel as well, "s30v" or something like that. (I have one on order).

Best of Luck
