Chive / Scallion assisted opening performance

My wife said she wanted an auto but they're illegal where we live. Instead I got her a pink Kershaw Chive for a Christmas gift and when it came I had to test out its assisted opening since I've never seen a Chive in person.

I only have . . . well, one flipper in my own collection - an RJ Martin Q-36 Jerzee Devil forum knife, and it flips really well. I've handled the Kershaw Leek before and I thought the Chive would be a great little assisted opener like the Leek, but with a shorter blade.

When I tested the Chive I was not impressed. It's pretty sluggish. With finger pressure alone it will lock open about 60% of the time for me. Knowing my wife won't sit around and "practice" flipping her knife or wait for a break-in period before the AO mechanism will actually work, I can't in good faith give this to her as an AO.

Can anyone who has handled both the Chive and the Scallion comment on whether the Scallion might more reliably lock open?

Thanks!

I own a SS Chive and my gf had a pink scales Scallion. I don't have any trouble with the AO and lock up on my Chive and it is a frame lock [the one I own]. The Scallion does feel more comfortable with thicker handles and a bigger flipper for more purchase.

Don't have trouble with either as far as lock up and AO.

Take a #6 torx and adjust the pivot a little at a time opening and closing the blade after each adjustment until it opens to your liking.

Be sure to check that there is no blade play after each adjustment also.

Good luck and Happy Holidays.

my ss chive opens extremely fast. its over 5yrs. old so i don't remember if it was slow at first then broke in... but it opens fast and locks reliably everytime.

Yeah, I think if you adjust the pivot (and possibly add a drop of oil to the joint) then it should be much more to your liking.

I own both a chive and a scallion. I agree that the smoothess of opening depends on adjustment of the blade pivot screw and lubrication. However, the size of the scallion makes blade deployment and closing much more comfortable for me than the chive.

My scallion has been lightning fast since day one 3 years ago. Definitely adjust the pivot and try again, my brother in law's leek was dog slow from the factory too because of the pivot.

My Scallion was sluggish after I first got it. After 30 or so openings it was it quickened up. It just has to be broken in.

elkins45 has the idea. Put a little drop of gun oil on it and work it 10 times or so. That should do the trick.

Love my little Chive that I've had for about 4 years. Opens fast and 100% if I add a drop of Rem Oil every now and then. Fine little knife.

What Relayer said except 2 yrs. My buddy's Leek started acting like you described at work so I took out some of our Militech 1 and applied just a drop and it started just like it never happened!

it is possible that you are not releasing your finger from the tab after you pull it. this can sometimes cause the blade to not open all of the way. in fact, it just happened to me right now as I am playing with my chive. try pulling the tab and releasing your finger as soon as the action kicks in
