Uncle Bill,
We all know that the BirGorkha kamis are making thicker blades, but I've noticed another phenomenon as well. It seems to me that the more recent the blade, the farther forward the kamis are placing the cho. I lined up a few same-size knives in descending chronological order to show what I mean:

Anyone else noticed this, or have I just been spending too much time looking at khukuris (heretical thought)?

Berk what is that lovely double fullered blade 2nd from bottom?
And what are you doing to get the beautiful blue patina?

Many Thanks.

Yvsa,
That's the BirGorkha kothimoda which Uncle Bill hand-carried back from Nepal. I think the blue color is caused by TufGlide on the blade reflecting in the scanner. BTW, your model for the dui chirra with diamond inlays is a real knockout - I'll be waiting to see how it turns out almost as eagerly as you.

Thanks Berk!!!
I hope that the Yvsa Cherokee Special Dui Chiarra is everything we can hope it to be!!!!

The old knives have a certain "feel" that the modern ones just don't have IMO. Although I like the new ones as well, which is proven by the small amount of them that I have.

A note of interest to me is the 1860 model you have pixed here. The inside curve is very much like the very old FC models while the double angle on the spine looks like a transition between the new and the old. The handle, what I can see of it looks to have the curve of the FC models as well? It looks like a well used khukuri.

Khukuri FAQ

Berk, I agree with you. Looking at my own khuks, comparing newer to older, and comparing them to pictures of other khuks, there definitely appears to be pronounced "cho creep." I can't help but wonder why the change, but having the cho farther away from the bolster does help in the event a khuk needs to have its handle replaced. To remove an old handle you have to remove the tip of the tang, and if the handle was short to begin with, you wouldn't have much tang left to work with when securing the new handle. But with the newer cho placement, you can create more tang without getting too close to the cho. This is the reason that I'm all for the "cho creep" -- it allows for more options regarding handle size when replacing handles.

Yvsa, the old sirupati is one I was able to talk John Powell out of. As you can see from a closeup, "well-used" is an accurate decription

Steven, interesting point - I hadn't thought about replacing the handle.

For some reason I can't view the pix. I have been having a hell of a time with pix lately and don't know why. But I'll take your word for it.

I didn't notice the creep but there's got to be a reason for it. I'll ask the kamis and see if they can tell us anything. I doubt if it will affect strength or performance in any way.

In some scores of years we may see second cho showing up from the bolster.

Possibly a cho is creepint BACK as time goes by. (X-file theme) Top khukuri had its cho ahead when it was made? The truth is out there.

"Yes sir, what seems to be the problem?"
"Doctor, I have Cho Creep."
"Hmmmm, you'd better see a specialist."
"But Doctor, the formulary for my HMO doesn't cover expenses due to Cho Creep. What should I do?"
"Take two Kagas Katnes and call me in the morning. Or better yet, call someone else in the morning."

Mizutani San.

I guess it surprise me no more --- some factory made Khukuris even lost their Chos ... they crept away leaving the blades ...

My colleage asked me why the blade shape of Khukuri is crooked --- I said that I didn't know --- he told me that the Khukuri is so old that it's spine is so weak --- he told me to buy walking sticks for all my Khukuris ...

Mohd, you are showing the vision how all katanas will look like in the future? In old sayings heaven is not above us, but far away beyond the sea. People send elder ones' souls this way, facing west... Nepal included.
