Hi Guys

I live in the UK and I am looking for a general purpose small chopper and for fire building and camp use.

Ive come up with these three of similar price, but in terms of blade shape and steel use which would be best for a bit of hard work and camp utility stuff ?

Hope the links all work at Hennie, if theres something better that can carry fire making stuff and a few bits thats a good little chopper then I would love to here of it.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts or advice on the above before I buy.

The Wiseman's design is the least silly of the three, but for a glorified 1055 machete, 124.95 (about $195 US) is outrageously overpriced.

Wow! Is everything in England this expensive? The Trakker seems "silly," as Marcinek puts it, and the other two seem sensible if overpriced. Can't you buy a cheaper kukri than the Wiseman chopper? $200 US seems exorbitant for such a widely used tool. The Bravo seems better suited to camp chores and the Wiseman looks like more of a dedicated chopper.

Skip these and go with a Fallkniven A-1, Cold Steel Stainless Recon Scout, or Bark River Bravo 1 (or 2 for more size).

Tastes vary though, so choose to meet your own desires. These are more my flavor.

Get used to the UK prices. Thats the way it is. As a matter of fact i buy all my knives from Heinnie because theyre cheaper than mainland Europe.

As for the knives, id pass on all 3 of those. Take a look at the Beckers. Theyre proven knives and get rave reviews everywhere. Plus theyre great value for the money.

If you want to shell out abit more cash, then the Fallkniven A1 is king.

The Cold Steel SRK is a good, tough, allround knife too, but i wouldnt think it'll make a good chopper.

Search the forums here and youll see which knives are popular on BF.

I've to agree with you in everything!
Bought loads of stuff from Heinnie and I have an A1. I like it a lot!

Thanks guys for all the info so far, as usual great advice. Yes UK prices are expensive and I try if possible to import from state side, of the bay which can be done in a round about way.

But Heinnie is about as good as the UK gets for its knives. Ive seen the trakker do some tests and seems to be able to take some serious abuse, but just not sure about resharpening with those grinds, and the handle of course. The Tops knife would be fine if it were a little longer, I asked Tops and they say their selling so many they have no need to change the design Ohh well!! The wiseman just looked like a one job tool, couldnt see me using apart from clearing bush and not round the camp etc.

I have an Fallkniven A1, SRK Cold steel, Beckers and a reasonable range of knives but I as much as I love them all I just dont use them out whilst camping, Tried the Tops WSK but dont like the balance among other things. So I thought I'd have a go at the impossible task of finding a knife that did a bit of everything well LOL.

And at the price range of up to £150 thats where I got.

Thanks for the link to the other knife they have some cheap and interesting blades in that range. Not sure about the handles thou.

Thanks for everything so far are there any state side I should consider ?

You are really hung up on the exotic designs! If a "woods knife" with a lot of writing on the blade and extraneous pointy bits stuck all over it is what you are after...that's fine. If that's the case I think you are missing the obvious choice from TOPS...the Myke Hawke Hellion. I think it is exactly what you are looking for.
