With all thats been going on with Camillus I have been lookin at Beckers. I went ahead and ordered a Bk7 and started to order a BK9 when I started looking at Ranger Knives RD series. Realistically by the time you get a BK9 and a set of Micarta grips for it you are in the general neighborhood, pricewise, of a Ranger. So opinions: go ahead and jump and get a BK9 or just get a Ranger RD7 or RD9 when convenient?

I have no experience with the Becker. BUT, I do have several Rangers. Get a Ranger!!!

Ranger won't disappoint you, great deal for the price. I haven't used a Becker though...

If Beckers are getting scarce, I'd go with the RD series. This way you're covered should something happen to your blade. Ranger will replace your knife should it break. I own both a Becker BK9 and several Rangers and think that either one would serve you well.

The plus side on Rangers is that you can have it customized to your needs.

I too have been thinking about a Ranger lately, now if we only had some Ranger in action photos here, mmm:D

I have both the BK9 and RD9. No comparison, for a hard use blade the Ranger is far superior. It is overbuilt, 1/4" thick 5160 (also you can get S7 for more impact toughness), better handle design (though I don't car for the bird's beal pommel at all).

As far as cutting performance, unless you ask Justin to really thin down the edge, the Becker is going to be a better slicer.

Thin down that Ranger edge (a lot!!) and you will have a fine knife for the hardest uses.

FWIW, I keep my Ranger next to my fireplace, it is my indoor splitting wedge and kindling maker. . .

I had this RD9 thinned when I ordered it as I wanted something that would also cut. It's still a decent chopper too.

I am sure Justin will modify your Ranger if you so desire, but out of the box my Becker was much better fit & finish. My Ranger was downright sloppy, uneven edge, poor finish with air bubbles, etc. I was underwhelmed. I am, however, quite impressed with Becker. I might order another one just in case if something bad does happen to Camillus.

5160 is very easy to sharpen so you can thin down the edge yourself

Hwyhobo - I have exact opposite experience, my RD6 has very good F&F. Have you tried to contact Justin? I'm sure he will make it right

Ranger all the way...Ya break it and Justin will replace or fix it for ya

Huugh,
I really like that pic...I need to thin my Rd9 down a little bit

And Justin does Customs

Yup go for the RANGER RD series. After a very long time searching for a blade to suit my needs in the Aussie Outback I am settling on the RD7 for my needs and will be asking Justin to thin the edge for me - should be all I need for a very long time. :)

The RD9 can be expected to be tougher than the BK9, and if you like a heavy chopper would get the nod as well.

The BK9 should hold an edge better, and IMO is one of the best designs in a knife of this size for more precise work due to lack of finger choil and edge coming right up to the front of the handles.

Assuming Camillus goes under, the Becker warranty may not mean much. Of course Ranger could go out of business too.

Also consider this .... If you decide you really like big knives like these, you'll probably wind up buying a Busse eventually. :) Since Busse values are like $$$ or gold bullion on BFC sell/trade forums and always seem to go up in value, maybe that's what you should go for.

id say the Camillus BK9, jsut hat i jsut got one for liek 55 i think it was brand new or amybe it was a bk7 but any ways taht liek 40 dollars less thatn the ranger, they are both great knives tho http://www.survivalsheath.com/knives/index.htm

oaky so the bk9 is 60, 70 shiped but thats alot less thatn the ranger, jsut what i think but hey they are both sweet, i also love the rat7, they all work well and are well worth it
