Good morning board,

I am very impressed with the AK 15 and it chops well but I would like something with a bit more heft to it and was thinking that the CAK would be a good choice. But then I got to thinking that since I want an 18 inch that I'd go for one of these two, either the WW2 or the AK 18. Can you help me out here and tell me which would be the better choice and why.

Thanks,

Cutter

The AK is probably going to be about 8 ounces heavier. Either will chop well, with the AK having a bit of the edge due to the increased weight.

Boy it is tough to suggest a "chopper" for someone else. I think if you view the catalog site, something will jump out at you. I think 18 inches is the max for a useful chopping khuluri. You can get by with a longer Sirupati or Chitlangi because the blade is narrower, but an AK gets pretty heavy past 18 inches and can be dangerous when your arm tires out.:o

I do not like a 18" WW 2 but that is me. I do love the 16.5 inch one though. And many of my friends do to. I gave one to a friend that loves it. But I gave a 16.5 inch CAK to a young fellow who is 6 ft 4" and 230 lbs and can swing that blade all day. He has a piece of land near the St John's and he uses it to clear the brush growing up along the water. Some don't like the Chiruwa handle but he does. [me too]

So if you insist asking, buy a 18 inch AK, I like mine, and you feel a need for a heck of a chopper. Try it; you will like it or sell it off and get another. I think collect 10 or 12 and then decide what you like. That's what I did.:)

Good luck! If you get down by Orlando get in touch I have a bunch and allot of wooded areas to chop around. [pun intended]:D

Thanks guys for the input. I realize its an individual decision like choosing a firearm, but it helps to hear others opinions. I'm going to try and limit myself to just a few, I see how easy it is to go overboard with these blades.
Thanks for the invite sams, If I ever get out that way I'll drop you a line.

A "few" for me turned out to be 5 . . . so far.

BAS, WWII 16.5", 20" AK, Gelbu 25", Kerambit.

I have an 18.5 inch 34 ounce CAK its a beast and was my first Khuk, I don't have a WW2 so can't comment on it. I can tell you that the CAK is incredible a real monster, I'd stake my life on it.

I've a Ganga Ram 22"...a gift from a friend.

An awesome beast indeed.

if you like the 15" AK, your going to like the 18" in terms of real chopping heft.

Please keep in mind, that you may not necessarily want a heavy knife that is too unwieldy (depending on your physical build).

If you want some serious wood destroying ability, a 20" AK will put a big smile on your face.

I really like the horn handle it fits very well. I chopped some old dead tree limbs yesterday, most measuring no more than an inch in diameter, knocking them down was fairly easy but I think another pound of steel would simplify the task.

Ah...maybe I'm too late. A 17"-ish BGRS is a terrific combination of reasonably light weight and chopping ability.

I picked up the 18" Samsher by Sarge Khadka today, that should do it for me, at least until next week.
