Choil or not to choil...that is the question...

I like to place my finger close to the blade, just for fun. It also helps when sharpening or stropping the blade.

Anything under six inches = no choil. Around six inches could go either way. Seven and longer needs a choil. Just my input. :)

I like choils on everything, one for looks and two for utility, I like having it incase I need it, and if I don't I can hold my knife normally.

I use choils on blades that are meant to do everything: from chopping over batoning to preparing feather sticks and food.

If I have a fully dedicated chopper (above 9" or so) I will always have a smaller knife with me and would switch to the smaller blade before I use the choil on the big one. That's why most likely nobody misses a choil on the KZ.

On smaller blades (below 6" or so) I don't need a choil because handling should be good enough for all delicate tasks in standard grip.

So, I personally wouldn't miss the choil on my NMFBM nor would I miss it on a BATAC. BUT I would definitely miss it on a TG, FSH, SFNO and the like...

Conclusio: Pro choil from 6" to 9"

Just my humble point of view, experiences might differ...

On small knives I like no choil. if a smaller knife has a choil, it needs to be a useable chol big enough for my finger.

If the choil is too small for a finger, it should be an absolute nubins of a choil. About a pencil lead thick or so. Just enough that it does help with sharpening to the edge.

But really, at that point why not just get rid.

The elf choil on my bad (gw etc) does seem to get in the way especially when cutting softer material like plastic etc.

So for the Anorexic boss street, no choil for me!

Or large choil so it can actually be used.

On bigger knives....sure, large choil makes sense.
