Hi everyone, I am wondering if choji oil that is normally used to protect katanas from rust would be useful in maintaining my super karambit. Is there any adverse effect on the blade's black finish? What other oils do you all use?

Sure, that oil will work. That's what I use but a light coat of any quality oil will do the trick.

The black coating is for protection so you dont NEED it but it will give you a nice glossy sheen to the blade if you do use it. I cant see it doing any harm to the finish either.

I personaly just use "tuff cloth" but only on my un-coated blades. Oils do a great job but here in Taiwan during the summer its regulalrly 80-90+% humidity so things just rust as you look at them if you dont use something to keep it at bay. I found oils just wear off to quickly especially when im using the knife out in the bush.
Back home in Scotland a bit of chainsaw oil is all i really ever spill... i mean use on my blades though :D

Bro Haze---Emerson's Warranty card states that his knives will surface rust. I'd definitely keep'm lubed!

Iv never had an EKI rust up on me out here yet, my TKmini7 took a bit of spotty rust but it wiped off and hasnt come back since i tuff clothed it. That is beadblasted so is obviously way more prone to rust any way. My stripped La Griffe also went a bit spotty but again just wiped off.
Iv never had any problems with rust on the coated blades though, my 12 sees alot of neglect out here and its held up very well indeed as far as rust goes. Iv only ever had rust forming on the exposed edge but that came off pretty easy and a sharpening cleaned it right up.

There is clearly no harm in being carefull though :)

last summer when i was fishing at the coast my coated SOCFK spotted just a little but it was very lite and considering i was on the ocean i have never given it a 2nd thought.

have never had it happen when i'm in my neck of the woods, & i rub them down w/a tough cloth every month or 2 at best.

Oil on the locking surface shouldn't hurt anything if the lock is properly designed. If the geometry is bad though then it may cause an already unsafe lock to close more easily. Choji oil is something like 90% mineral oil with the balance clove oil for scent, it's also very slightly acidic(not enough to ever cause a problem). It will work fine for knives but there are better products out there for lubrication and protection. Choji oil is likely safer on food though and shouldn't make it taste like tire rubber should you get it on the food.

I used Hoppes Gun Oil to coat a light film on the black area of my 15, and special emphasis of coat on the exposed steel part on the grind.

Please please tell me Hoppes gun oil will not FADE my black finish

M2002---I don't know if Hoppe's will damage the finish, it shouldn't, but I found Hoppe's too thick for an oil.

I'm really crossing my fingers that hoppes doesn't do anything to the finish. Because I applied it to my lot, CQC7, Super Karambit :foot:

Yes hoppes tend to be higher in viscosity than my breakfree that's why I chose it.
