Any of you living in the non Boreal regions of Canada or the U.S. probably see choke cherry bushes, all along river and stream bottom land. Once in a while I find clumps of this brush with solidified sap lumps on it. I gathered some last and this year. I was just out and checked its burning properties in regard to boosting a recalcitrant fire. Basicly it sucks and does almost nothing to enhance a fire. I also found a huge mature spruce that a beaver tried to chew down which was weeping heavily with sap. I chucked out the choke cherry blobs from my fire and dropped in some spruce. And yes, just as in the north, this sap melted and burned giving off a horrendous flame\fire. I filled a plastic baggy with the spruce sap and it can be a fatwood supplement. Anyway. The point of this post is that if your region does not have fatwood, don't sweat it. Just find some ever greens and use the sap lumps. Don't bother with the choke cherry as I said, it is virtually useless. Just some observations from trying out different sap lumps around here in the south.
