Here’s a new EDC sized “Baby Bowie”, 8 and ½ inches OAL. The blade is 1065,… bronze guard, copper spacer, twisted mild steel wire wrapped ferrule. The handle is “Staghorn Cholla”, cactus skeleton. The end pieces are bronze and copper. It’s very similar to, and inspired by, a collaboration knife I recently did with Ray Richard.

Very nice Tai! I was wondering how many different substances you could use to fill the Cholla interior. Also had a thought of putting a very nice Cholla specimen in a Lucite handle. kevin fox

Hi Kevin,

I didn't have to fill the cholla surface "pores". The secret is that I started by harvesting the "Staghorn Cholla" green to preserve the natural pith intact. After I cut it, I peeled it and air dried it. "Staghorn" cholla is the most solid and woodiest type of cholla cactus there is,... the only kind I use for handles. However, if it seasons out in the desert and elements, something eats the pith out, in which case it would need to be filled. It does have an epoxy core and is sealed with shellac.

I really like the natural look of the cholla. :)

sweet, Tai!
I'd love to see the fruits of your collaboration with Ray in making a knife.

Thanks!

Lorien, There are some pics of the "Wild Geezers collaboration #1." knife in my "On the Bench 2009" album. Chuck at Wild Rose Trading Company plans to make a sheath for it. I don't put every knife in this album, but just some of the more interesting and newer designs.

Also, check my main website for availability and ordering on these and similar knives.
