I have narrowed it down to a few decisions for my fixed blade Camping/Hiking/Survival knife. I want something I can use around the camp site for most chores and can still rely upon it as a survival knife should the need arise. I want something with a drop-point style blade as I have read they are the most inhearently strongest. My choices include these....
1. Becker Companion (I like the crewman but want a drop-point style blade)
2. Cold Steel Master Hunter (Says it comes in carbon-v and aus-8 steels, which one is better??)
3. Benchmade Rand DPT (Have seen posts about the blade being too thin, is this true??)

Help me decide which one of these 3 will be best for all around survival/camp use!!!

I'll add a knife to the list that I like much better than those you have listed. Northwoods Willow Leaf in D2.

What is the difference between the bog-dog and the howling rat?? besides steel is one thicker bladed???

Bog Dog is 1/8", HR is 3/16" Here is a pic i found showing them both:

Bog Dog is on the bottom, Howling Rat is third from the top. The Choil Notch has been made deeper on the new Howling Rats, and the D2 Bog Dog has been discontinued, although I hear it will be coming out in SR-101.

put a benchmade nimravus up there...it is my hard use camping knife that is not too expensive...i am able to give it a lickin' without worrying about it.

Drop point blades are not specially strong. This is a hunting knife blade style. It is a point design that is less likely to accidentaly snag on an internal organ and contaminate the inside of game you are field dressing. If you don't hunt I would not particularly favor drop points over other styles. I would suggest the BK&T Crewman as a better choice for your application than the Campanion. It would cut better.

The new Bog Dog is going to be 3/16" thick SR101/52100, so blade shape will be the only significant difference between the Howling Rat and the Bog Dog.

Hi !
Like other members of the forum, i can say that the Swamp Rat and Busse's knives are really strong plus they have the best guarantee i've seen on the market !
Chris Reeve also offer really good knife with tremendous finish and quality (but you will pay for what you get, even if it's not expensive for this quality...)
The Fallkniven F1 is also a really good choice :strong, versatile, stain resistant and i find it easy to resharpen... :D
Between the 3 you want, i guess i will choose the choose the Companion : i have a BK7 and was really surprise by the quality considering the price i pay for ... :D
Good luck ! :)

The Fallkniven F1 would be my choice. With Peter's health as it is, who knows how long they will be available.
The Cold Steel Master Hunter Carbon V is an equally good knife but common and not in danger of disappearing.

From your choice, I'd pick a BK companion, now from my choices, I would pick a BRKT Woodland, its convex edge gives more durability, else the F1 is quiet a sure choice ;)

When and where can I get my hands on one of those Ritter MK2/BK-12, I like the idea of that length and blade style?? Why the hell do they tease us like this?? "Hey I am making the perfect knife for your needs but I dont know when it will be out." God damn it!!! :grumpy:

I have the BK&T Campanion, and after I got it, I traded off all of my other fixed blades--I love this knife! Damn thing is, now I'm going to have to go and buy the BK12...
