OK, here's the challenge. I've been considering the Camillus EDC in D2 but there are two things I just don't like about it - the metal handle and the etching on both sides of the blades. So I'm looking for an alternative EDC folder within the following parameters.

Blade Length - 2.5 to 3 inches
Blade Shape - Drop point (I really like the Camillus EDC blade)
Steel - ATS-34, ATS-55, VG10, D2 or something else in this ballpark.
Handle Material - No metal, wood or rubber, so micarta, G10, zytel, etc.
Lock - anything considered
Price - $100 max

I'll look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Have you considered the Fallkniven P-1?

You get micarta handle slabs and 3 inch VG-10 blade. It looks like an awesome knife. I'd take a chance on it, given Fallkniven's reputation.

How about a FRN Spyderco Delica? The blade is right at your 3 inch limit, but the price is WAY below your $100 limit...In fact, with a little shopping-around, you should be able to buy a pair of 'em...Maybe a plain-edge AND a fully serrated or combo-edge.

Some other options:

BM 556 (clip point)
Spyderco Calypso Jr (micarta/frn if you can find them) - wrong blade shape though
Spyderco Native
Kershaw Scallion
Spyderco Lil Temperance - either blade shape

There are lots of options. What are you going to use it most for? Oh, and at least to me the feel of the knife is very personal, so try to find as many of these as you can to figure out what just feels -right-.

Regards,
Cedric

Some of these may not have the drop point that you're looking for but, my suggestions would be any of the following:

Spyderco FRN Calypso Jr.
Spyderco FRN Native
Spyderco FRN Delica

All are lockbacks, under the $100 max, with Fiber-Reinforced Nylon handles, and available in VG-10 steel(Native is in VG-10 and CPM440V).

Good Luck.

The Fallkniven looks nice and uses good materials, I have'nt heard of any "user reports" yet. Among knives I know, Benchmade 705 I think is excellent choice, also small Spyderco Wegner would be perfect if you can find one (or large if you want a bigger blade, 3-1/2"!)

Any William Henry Fits the bill if you get the Carbon Fiber series. I've had mine for about 36 hours and while ultra light (1.6 oz.) it is a very nice folder. 3.25 inch spearpoint 154cm blade, Carbon fiber handles, Anodized liner lock and pocket clip, hand rubbed 800 grit finish on the blade and near custom work. can be had for a shade over 100 bucks online. retails for 220. I started eyeing them at a knife store and put them off because there weight didn't make me look at it as a strong folder. I now stand corrected! very stout for it's weight. You won't be able to puncture car doors but it will handle most and food prep/office/home cutting tasks. If you need to cut down a tree get an AX if you need to use a knife for knife like tasks get a WH. They look great with a suit or jeans and Tshirt.

Satin Vector: I don't think that would fit his 100 max limit.
I think it'd be hard to get at close to 100 after the shipping and stuff.

I am just dying to get my hands on an Al Mar SERE 2000. It comes highly recommended as an EDC and utility/survival folder. The blade is 3,5" but everything else is worth checking out. I think it might be a bit over $100 though...gosh.

Otherwise a good CRKT Contrail is very good value for money, then there is also the Boker Superliner, Then the CRKT Jim Hammond Navajo which is a real cool looking knife, Darryl Ralph 605 liner lock folder kit knife, Gerber Spectre or Air Ranger, Sog Flash, CRKT Ryan 7, And if all else fails a good Victorinox SAK - the new Swisschamp XLT or Cybertool 43.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys. I guess Spydercos are the obvious choice at the price I indicated, but I already have three Spydercos and like the idea of giving something else a try.

Buzzbait, the Fallkniven P-1 seems definitely worth a look. I hadn't even heard of this knife but I'm going to do some research on it. Thanks again.

BM 730 The Ares Axis Lock awsome blade only down side is it's a little longer than you wanted, BUT ONLY A LITTLE!

Enough Spydies?? Is that possible?:D

If you do want to give something else a try,the Benchmade 730 mentioned above does fit your specs almost perfectly. It has a drop point blade of 154CM , G-10 handle and Axis lock.

It may be hard to find information on the Fallkniven P-1. It's a pretty new design, so I doubt many people have done extended testing on it. It does look like a beauty though!!!

See if you can get someone to sell or trade you one of the Boye Dendritic Steel folders. The steel version had a "street price" of about $50. It's cast 440C, which holds an edge well, cuts wonderfully, and is amazingly easy to sharpen.
They still make a version in stellite ("Dendritic Cobalt") for about $130.
