right in my backyard. Wrong gear choice for that particular area of the mountain. Skill levels of those involved NOT suitable for that area either. Sorry, just being blunt. Sad a person died in such a manner, but there really has to start being some responsibility on people who venture forth into EXTREME terrain. Skammer (SARTECH) was right on so many levels.

That sucks, so many people seem to underestimate conditions on the north shore mountains

backcountry grouse is no cake walk, especially trails in the upper ridges away from the main areas.

i dont get it though, these guys went out with snow shoes with cleats?

that leads me to believe that they were out in shoes with some sort of crampons rather than actual snow shoes.

i feel sorry for the young man's family.

Tragic. That does look like kinda tough terrain to be trying out a pair of 'Sport Snowshoes'. Does anyone know if it was a case of lost footing, or unstable ground ?

lost footing with sport style (rental, recreational) snowshoes. Footing lost in an area NOT meant for recreational users, heck even experienced mountaineers with experience and rope gear.....

That's a shame. It wasn't the shoes, though. I'm sure they just didn't understand the hazards of the country. It's hard to make good decisions when you don't know how much you don't know.

I dont mean to come off high and mighty and uber experienced, but at some point some bloody basic common sense and personal responsibility needs to be front and center.

makes me pissed off is all. EVERY year this province goes thru this, and every year we get the same bloody incidents happening.

I thought he meant small lightweight snowshoes slick except for small crampons at the toe and heel. Mostly meant for trail running or hiking trails. Not much buoyancy if you're on anything other than a packed trail. I don't know much about snow shoes mind you.

this is what im thinking as well. the rentals they have at grouse are not meant for anything beyond the well packed and flagged back country trails at grouse. going out of bounds with those rentals is a suicide mission.

even with proper equipment, without training, its generally useless.
