Choosing a Kukri

I recently asked for recommendations for a big bad fixed blade.
Some posters suggested I get a Kukri.

I'm very much warming to the idea, but HI has so many models on offer that I'm slightly overwhelmed.

Since I'm looking for both a tool and a weapon, I suggest splitting those two and getting a dedicated Kukri for each application.

What is the best model for splitting wood and yardwork?
And which would be the most awesome zombie killer?
Oh yeah and showing off is another use for this knife. :D

Input welcome.

Hello again, mendelb!,

Must be you've been poking around our forum....lol?
True, we have many models and it can seem overwhelming. But it really isnt, unless you're really fussy ;)

We have dedicated choppers, dedicated fighters and some which are a combination of both.
We also offer kerambits, parang, bolo, swords and just plain ol' knives among other things.
There are also fair trade items such as hats, jolas and the like all handcrafted in nepal.
It all depends on what style you like and how big you like em'
It also depends on how big a person you are.
Our forum is full of good knowledgable people who can help you get thru this part.
We are all friends there and always willing to have new friends join us.
It's kinda like the traditionals forum there, in that we are always respectful of the forum and each other.
Many long friendships have been made in that forum.
There is much to read and see there.
I think i've organised it pretty well for the new person to get around, just look in a sticky called "The Link Library".
Just be forewarned that once you are hooked on H.I. khukuri...there is no escape and your wallet will hate you.
Not because the prices are high, because in the grand scheme of things they arent. they are actually one of the best value per dollar khukuri's on the market today..... but because once you have one, you want more.

If you would like help with this problem, just click on the triangle thing in the lower left corner of your post and request that this thread be moved to our forum. A supermod will then move it there for you and our crack team of know it alls will probably make your head spin with reccommendations.

Hope this helps a bit and hope to see you there.

I'll warn you, I asked the same question some 20 years ago, and ended up buying them all. :D

I would suggest that many of these knives are really massive, heavy and bulky (and very sharp). Start by picking something that you can handle comfortably for whatever tasks you have in mind; one of the mid-size model that is around 16-18" in OAL would be a great place to start. Then you can decide where you want to go from there.

Sounds like you want a WWII. I remember when I was in the same pickle and wanted a khuk that would be both a good chopper and weapon and after some research, the WWII sounded like the perfect balance for a good chopper and weapon.

WWII is a great choice, although I like a bit more of a pointy end, and it's pretty curved.

Depending on your budget, I'd look at the Ultimate Fighter, Ang Khola (always popular, although I'd get the stick tang version in your situation; it will handle a lot better), WWII, or maybe a Sirupati or Chitlangi (thinner in width, but many are just as thick).

I've also got an Amar Singh Thapa which is VERY thick, and that makes it more unwieldy for me than the WWII.

My favorite khuk overall as a fighter and general utility blade is the Ultimate Fighter. It's got a sharpened back swedge though, so bear that in mind if you're planning on batoning. The chitlangi is a very fast fighter, although I can't say how it does at chopping, because I haven't tried that. The dui chirra might be a good choice too, since the double fuller makes the blade a bit lighter and faster.

An Ang Khola would make a great fighting weapon as well. My 16.5" Chiruwa AK chops just as good as my 18" WWII and I have no doubt it would make a more than suitable weapon if the situation ever called for it. I use my WWII more though since it's a villager model (no high polished blade or fittings) and the hidden tang allows better shock absorbtion making it more comfortable to use. My CAK looks so nice I have a hard time using it knowing it's gonna get scratched up.

H.I. WWII , Ontario spec plus, cold steel kukri machete...if you can afford it Busse Killa zillia

16.5" WWII. You will NOT be disappointed. Watch for a Deal of the Day to pop. WWIIs are common fare for DsOTD and you'll likely find one at a price you can't refuse.

I would reccommend the 16" WWII also....it is part weapon part tool and is probably the easiest for a beginning khukuri user to learn to use. I just wanted you to get opinions from other than me first.
