Choosing a Survival Knife

I used to suggest a Ka-bar and a SAK for the average joe. Gives you a hard use knife and a fine edged sharp one for smaller work. Also, 2 is better than 1!

I'm sure there are better options out now though. Maybe post in the Wilderness forum here for input.

Stretch that $100 just a little bit and you can get this awesome knife, which comes with a stellar warranty.

Do you have any other specifications that you are looking for in the knife besides that it be under $100?

By large, what do you mean? 5 inches? 10 inches? I'd look at the Kabar Becker BK7 and the Condor Rodan, Kumunga or 12 inch Bolo. For 100 dollars, you could get a Becker BK7, AND, 1-2 of these:
A SAK Spartan
Buck Paklite Skinner
Condor or Tramontina Machete
Cold Steel tomahawk

The BK7 and 9 already come with a 440A Stainless piggyback small fixed blade knife called the Remora. Should make for a good companion slicer.

I'm looking for something with at least a 7" blade and I'd prefer a full flat grind.... exactly like the one in the pic.

+1 to esee 6...great blade, great value, great comfort/application, great warranty which you'll probably never even need but nice to know is there.

if the ESEE6 is too small, the BK7 or BK9 are probably your best bet.

zombie zeke that was a good funny, made my evening. the becker 9 is good equipment but really i think you could do better with the marine ka-bar & an sak.

this definitely would have been better posted in the wilderness survival forum.

how about an izula and a SAK farmer....or a kabar and a farmer

how bout condor kukri teamed with a mora and a leatherman. You would be runnin under 100 with this threesome:jerkit:

The ESEE -5. Used to be the RC-5. It's a little more than $100, but with a blade
that is .25" thick.... Man I love mine!!! I have the OD green one.

Get yourself a custom and put everything in it that you want. I did. This is a one off i designed and John at JK handmade knives made. We talked on the phone for a few minutes and by christmas last year i had a beautiful knife which had features from other knives i liked and a touch from me. Here's some pics. I believe he did it for 130. 3/16" 01 tool steel, maple burl handles with blue liners and solid brass pins. I wanted a slight drop point. Blade edge is 4" and the handle is 5".

You will not find the ESEE-6 too small at all. It's called the 6 but I think they've pretty much rounded down to the nearest inch. It is very big, very well-balanced, full flat ground, 1095 blade that will just as much at home chopping as slicing. You will not find it small unless you need a machete. Yes, there are bigger "survival" knives out there but for about $109 plus shipping, I doubt there is a better value than the ESEE-6.

Did I mention that you won't find it too small?
