Choosing between Mountaineer and Shadow 3

Hello to the Chris Reeve forum. I have finally decided to buy my first Chris Reeve one piece. I have several other medium/large 5-6 inch fixed blades I use for survival, hunting, camping, etc; Randall, Marbles, Strider etc. I have heard nothing but great things about the Reeve one piece range. I have no small blade for food prep and other utility type chores and would like to fill that spot.

Iv'e settled on the Mountaineer and Shadow 3 due to the 4 inch blade length which I think would suit my needs due to the unobtrusive size.

Can anyone offer any pros or cons between these two. I'm sure it's come up before, but cannot use the search feature.
I am mainly looking for the best all around utility blade with an emphasis on food prep, slicing etc.

Thanks Very much,

Cheers,
Hal

Greetings!! I've got the Shadow III. It does food prep and misc chores like you are talking about. It replaced a Buck 105 and a Buck BG42 Vangard.nothing wrong with these two, but, well, new toy...
Ilooked at the specs on the CR web site and it appears the main difference is the blade shape. I like the spearpoint better.
have fun.

I am considering those two knives myself. I'm leaning toward the Mountaineer because other posters mentioned the lack of an upper guard is a plus for fine cutting, like cooking, while the Shadow's double guard is better for hard tough jobs.

Thanks for the info. I think I am leaning toward the mountaineer 1 as well since I believe it has the narrower blade profile.

Cheers,
Hal

I have the Mountaineer II for the same purposes you reference. I really like the absence of the upper cross guard for food prep and finer work. On the same note, I find that the clip point seems handier for these types of uses than the spearpoint. I also have other knives for camping, survival etcetera. I use the Bucks and Busses frequently, but there is something about the CR One Piece Range knives that will prevent me from being without a few of them being around. Because I do not mind a larger knife I am partial to the Sable and the Mountaineer II.

Pick whichever you like best; you will not be sorry.

The other possibility is a custom order Shadow with a single guard. That gives you a hybrid between the Mountaineer and the Shadow. I have a 4" one that I really like. Would have prefered a true drop-point, but the spear point has most of the qualities I desired.
