Choosing 'blade of the day' among your favorites

I own, carry, use, and recommend the Spyderco Jester, the Spyderco Cricket, and the newly purchased Blade-Tech Mouse Lite.

Problem is, I have problems choosing which to carry. I have taken the clips off the Cricket and Mouse Lite. The clips are more trouble than they're worth to me.

I usually carry the Jester because it fits neatly into the tiny change pocket of all my bluejeans, which is what I usually wear to work. We have a very casual IT-oriented environment in a tiny company. The Jester won't frighten anyone. It also fits handily into any pocket of my blazer or my suit jacket.

The Cricket is a bit bigger and weightier. The Mouse Lite is bigger and even weightier, still.

Decisions, decisions.

Among these, which would be your own personal favorite and why?

Thinking of your own pocket folders, do you have a difficult time deciding which to carry?

Of course, just like everyone else. And I do not have time to spend on that kind of decision making. So I solve the problem by carryning a few of them.
:)

my only one that changes is whatever my front/right rotation is... and thats only among 3 knives now.

ss/pe police is general use/work... waiting on a neck rig though so I can carry 24/7 instead of my ss 'fly

ce military is hard use/beater... pulled it out for use on friday-sunday to do renovations downstairs and help my sister pack boxes at her house.

pe leaf blade lil temp is the do all knife... short for kitchen work unfortunetly, but does everything else.

I used to have trouble choosing, now I just let my hand gravitate to one and take it. Sometimes I choose based on mood or the weather too. Sometimes I take 2.

Then I'll go a few weeks where I pick one and carry it for 4-5 days straight and move o another.

There's always the ones that need sharpened vs the ones that were sharpened recently.

My choice is almost always based around the plans for that day.

In a couple of weeks I'll have 3 months to not worry about these decisions since I only have one truly ambidextrous knife to carry for when I have surgery on my wrists. Maybe I'll come out of it a changed man and sell all but one... but I doubt it ;)

Of course I also have plenty of time to pickup a few more ambi knives before surgery... then I'll be back to where I started...

What shaldag said. Can't just bring the woodie sebbie, or just the chinook II, or just the afck. So I bring 'em all, heck.

Watch pocket: Vic SAK Classic
Right rear pocket: Endura 50-50

Right FRONT pocket....rotated.

Nice day: Vic SAK One Hand Trekker (saw for weeds, screwdrivers for fixin)
Goin somewhere: Inconspicuous Fallkniven U-2
Once in a while: SE Delica

:)

how is that U2? i've been eyeing(eying?) one for a while but i haven't heard much feedback on them, holding an edge, ergos, etc.

The Mouse is the one I would recommend.
The others are just too small for my taste--actually, even the Mouse is too small for an EDC (IMHO).

Go bigger and I'll bet you never go back.

Good luck,
Allen.

Like somebody else said, I carry a few around. Depends a little on how I'm dressed and/or where I'm going but this is a typical load:

Car - Spyderco SPOT in centre console.
Jeans pocket - Spyderco Calypso Jnr.
Shirt pocket - Spyderco Cricket.
Keyring - Spyderco Ladybug.
Maxpedition M1 - Sebenza, Leatherman Micra, Rainbow Chive, Swiss Card
Belt - Leatherman supertool in pouch.

I generally have some mix of most of the above on or about me most of the time.

Benchmade 805s and 721s, as well as a SOG Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier and CrossCut...Those 4 have been my EDC for quite awhile now, so now it's a "no-brainer" for me.

That's basically what I'm doing now. If I fall into a deep pond I'm going right to the bottom. :D

Really? That's interesting. In my opinion, the Mouse Lite is the biggest I'd want to carry as an EDC. The Cricket is roughly the same size, regarding handle and blade width. The Jester is the smallest and is currently my favorite. It rides in the watch/change pocket of my jeans.

My experience is exactly the opposite. I'm quite satisfied with the smaller ones.

Some forum members experiment with how large they can realistically go with an EDC. I'm seeing how small I can go with an EDC. I'd love to get a plain-edge Ladybug and compare it to the Jester.

I also carry a "few" with me. Most common and most used: Ka-Bar/Dozier folding hunter (thumbhole) IWB, Spyderco FRN Delica/SAK Traveller left pocket (SAK is in a pouch). Less used - Mini-Ambush - clipped, Buck Metro in a pouch in my right pocket, Mini Pika occaisionally clipped. When I wear cargo pants, I will bring along a Heat and Native III. Leatherman PST on belt. Mini-Ambush, Pika, and the Heat will get rotated out depending...... :)

You should ask Lavan about the U2. A while back he simply would not shut up about that knife. Oops, that was him anyway, :footinmou

I'm a bit of a fan of small too. I don't have a Jester so I can't compare but I do have a PE ladybug on my keyring and it's a very useful little knife. Like other spydercos it seems to cut bigger than it's size suggests. Perfect keyring knife IMHO.

I stick to a strict personal rule of only carrying one knife at a time. It stays clipped to my strong side front pocket. Just so happens I also need my Cricket for a money clip, my SAK Rambler for a keychain fob, and my Dragonfly to balance the weak-side pocket. Yup, you'll never find me carrying more than one knife. ;)

The best small knife I could find for my keychain without breaking the bank was the Cold Steel Tuff-Lite, in clip point. It weighs nothing, has a nice lockback, and stays razor sharp (I make sure of that), the AUS8 steel is pretty good for such a small piece.I attached a clip on a string to the lanyard hole so I can take it off the ring easily.
I carry Swisstech pliers on my keychain, too, which have 2 sizes of phillips and straight screwdrivers. I use this pretty infrequently, but I'm always glad to have it when I need it. It's only 420 steel, but it holds its own, and can cut through fairly thick wire as well.
With my car key and 2 apt. keys on there, the whole chain weights about 4 oz., which goes well with my EDC in the same pocket.

I use the small knife for detailed tasks (I can even remove hangnails with it if I need to), and those that require discretion. In addition, I keep a straight razor in my wallet, sheathed with masking tape/cardboard thing I whipped up. It adds maybe 1/16" to my wallet, and can be really nice if I only have a wallet with me. Then, I keep the straight sections of 4 hairpins in my wallet as well. You'd be surprised when you'll need to pick a cheap lock, or some other random task that requires a small little pick of some kind. We were once a mile into the woods when my friend realized he forgot the key to his gun's internal bolt lock. Problem solved!
Finally, I keep a needle with the hairpins. It's handy for things you'd never think of, and worse comes to worse I can take some thread out of my jeans to perform some Rambo-esque field surgery .

Always be prepared... :D

P.S. You'd be surprised how often I hear "hey, you're from Maine, you got a knife on you?"

I use large paper clips as zipper pulls on my wallet. Never any problems with them and they can be very handy.

I would think the Jester is a bit too thick for keyring carry. The knife I carry on my keyring is the
Gerber Micro LST
