Choosing the Knife of the Day

I want to take a poll, I want to see how long it takes for you to choose which knife will be EDC'd that day. The Process involved, the time it takes, and if you find yourself changing your mind before you take off for the day. I know I cant be the only one...come on. I find this to be quite amusing at times.

I don't take very long in front of the knives, but I start thinking about it when brushing my teeth. Sometimes, I catch myself thinking about it the day before... Wait. I'm doing it now...

I actually sometimes pick my knife out the night before, I try to lay my EDC out before I go to bed. If I didn't get the chance the night before, I probably only spend 30 seconds to a minute max deciding on my gear for the day.

It's the "knife of a few weeks" for me usually, right now that's a orange Spyderco Delica. If I'm taking my daughter to the park it's always a Para 2 or CS Recon 1 though.

I'm trying to do over a year with one knife. (It IS very hard...)
So, 3 seconds it takes for me to grab it on my way out of my bedroom. :D

I usually just use one knife for a couple weeks. Then switch to another one. It's a nice system and doesn't spend much time picking out EDC's.

Depends. Am I wearing my lightweight shorts? Spyderco Paramilitary.

Dressing up for something? Case Stockman

Normal EDC gear? 0561

My day to day dictates what blade I carry.

Now, when it comes to heading to the woods, and I gotta choose a fixed blade, I usually start at least a week ahead of time, sorting out the details of the trip, trying out different handles, blade shapes, etc.

Sometimes I start 2 weeks in advance trying to pic a blade.

I carry the same thing every day, so like 2-3 seconds max. I don't really collect knives so much as look for one that fits my needs and then stick with that.

I've been carrying my Boker Exskellimoor II for a year or so now, and recently added a case peanut (first traditional).

Most days, it's the same setup: BK-14, BK-16, Leatherman Wave, there's no decision-making. If I have to go into the office, I carry a delica and alox farmer. The only decision is which other small blade I'll take. The small blade I usually choose the night before, it takes a few minutes.

Choosing a knife for camping can take a while. I start with everything I'd like to bring, and pare down by weight, size, likelihood of use, redundancy, et cetera.

If I get a new knife, I will often carry it for a few weeks, to get a feel for it. Then, I decide whether it replaces one of my EDC or fits a different carry profile.

If I'm not taking my Wharncliffe that Alan Davis made based on my design it is easy- my six year old daughter picks it for me! I might give her requirements (clipped folder, slipjoint, medium sized etc.) but the choice is hers!!

Sometimes it's the knife that was delivered the day before. Got a sheath for a GEC lumberjack, 2 blade. Carried that the next day. I'm always trying to switch it up. Bow hunting starts the 1st around here. I'm gonna carry my Randall 28.

I always carry a multitool - I just have a Surge so thats my only option, but as for the knives... depends on my pants of the day and the tasks it will take. denim workpants - might be my Enzo Camper but folders when I forgot to wear my belt, non-denim workpants - a folder or a smaller fixed blades, shorts - folders, cargo shorts - Enzo or folders, and so on.

and since knife laws in my country is not definite, when I back to my city home (now I work on the jungle), I always carry folders and I pick the not-intimidating folders ie. Spyderco GB, opinels, laguiole, SAKs,,, and still looking for a classic slipjoints

"Sorry I'm late.... I couldn't decide what to EDC" used to be my motto until I decided to EDC the same knife for at least a week before switching. So now I have the next EDC in mind before I actually have to grab it so it takes me no time at all.

i just spend about a minute choosing 1 traditional and 1 modern folder. I have gear in a pack that goes with me so I generally don't worry too much about it.
