On vacation finally at the beach and a few beers got me "thinking".

I really liked the various contests (olive challenge, etc)

What say you for a friendly chopping contest?

Here's my 1st shot at some ground rules, chime in to improve upon them.

1). A Becker product (of course)
2). Two swings at a 2x4 to remove a chunk, chunk has to be removed only by the swinging motion after the 2nd swing. Use a ruler with a photo to show size of chunk.

Yeah/neah?

The only issue I can see is that this is already heavily in the favor of those that have a 21.

A 4/9 would be out chopped, regardless of the edge on it and the thinness behind the edge due to the mass of the 21.

That being said, I would give it a shot with my 4.

NJ,

Good point, maybe just let everyone give it a go and best effort by knife type will emerge. There should be spirited competition between the 9 & 4 entries.

Just have categories...21/9/4/2...even 7/10/5...and 1 for those with a brute...I mean, its informal, no real contest, right?

NC,

Good idea, just like boxing weight class, and as you said it's just for fun.

I'll give it a shot

Super heavyweight: bk21 Reinhardt, bk6 Patrol Machete, bk1 Brute

Heavyweight: bk9 King, bk4 Machax

Upper Middleweight: bk5 Camp Magnum , bk2 Campanion, bk10 Crewman, bk7 Combat Utility, bk3 Tactool, bk12

Tweener weight: bk 15,16,17

lightweight: bk11, 14, 24

Flyweight: bk13 remora, 2x4 not required, it can chop any object it wants

This has me curious about how well my thinned 5 would hold up to a 2x4...

Anyone in the know think that .025 - .030 shoulder width wouldn't hold up?

I am thinking it would be a nice test, but I don't want to trash it when it makes such a nice carver.

I'm perfectly OK with these rules as they sit, for whatever knife a person wants to bring to the game.
As we have seen at several chopping competitions, it's often not the knife being swung, but how -- technique plays a LOT into these types of games.

my big question -- are we talking about an unsupported 2x4 (i.e. the part we're cutting into has nothing but air under it, so the 2x4 is free to flex as it's being hit)
Or
are we chopping into a board fully supported. (i.e. on a table or thoroughly braced on both sides of the cutting area, etc...)

kind of like the difference between lopping off branches and splitting kindling

Oh it's on Eric..... This should be fun. I may have to run to Ethan's to borrow a 21 though. I am going with my trusty 9 for first go.

I don't think the Brute should be in the same "class" as the 21...
Not sure about the 6, either; but it does have a length advantage over all but the 21.

Do the two cuts have to be on the same side (notch style)? Or can we go for the gold and do the second from the opposite side?

Seems like so far this is the feedback

1) have knife classes or none? Let's wait for more people to chime in to get more feedback.
2) supported 2x4 or not? The user gets to choose how to hold the 2x4 for their best results.
3) bk6 has an unfair advantage? Perhaps, will need to figure out if knife classes should exist or not 1st
4) 2cuts on same side or both? It's up to the user, and the knife type they choose. If someone splits a 2x4 with a bk13, I'm sponsoring a GAW.....

I was thinking not necessarily classes but each Knife in its own...
In other words player A says "here's my chop with a 9, then my 21, and here's my 5" etc...so its really each individual on an even scale with their Blade(s) of choice

NC,

1st off, happy Easter, hope you and yours are having fun. Wish I had my 21 and a 2x4 right now, I'm almost knife less on vacation right now (took a plane and didn't want TSA stealing any good steel) which feels totally unacceptable (just have a 3" folder).

Ok, I understand what you meant now, I like that idea; just keep it simple and just see what folks do with their knives. Sounds good and less hassle. Sometimes, the over planning control freak inside me gets carried away....

Hope more people chime in.
