Any ideas about what knife I should get for around $300. It needs to be a very solid camp knife mostly used for chopping and batonning. It need to be a tool steel, a convexed edge, and a durable handle material.

So far I have looked at some fehrmans like the extreme judgment and final judgment. I have heard busse makes solid knives too. ANY IDEAS?

Becker knife and tool seems to makea solid knife. With the extra cash you could buy sandpaper and a strop. Or you could pay for somebody to do a convex edge. Bob Siegal makes nice choppers. He is amker on these forums.

The Busse Bushwacker Mistress is $347 right now directly from Busse. Take a look at it - it will take anything you can throw at it and the warranty is rock solid.

Dude your gonna get as many posts with differing ops as posters.

Why do you need tool steel?

The Fehrman knives are awesome so are Busse's (finding the model you want then waiting for the price or the knife to come back around is tedious, but if you got the dough and time to kill its a fine knife).

I have a Himalayan Imports AK Bowie and Chunk Munk both get used more than the 300 dollar plus knives.

Ranger and Tops make great camp knives the RD 7-9 or Tops Armageddon or Anacondas...

BK and T has been mentioned they are great knives, keep an eye on the heat treat some have been known to get brittle. I have a BK9 as a standby camper for 7 years, its beat to hell but still working hard and getting ready to be passed on to my little brother in law.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Man, there are so many awesome capable choices to choose from. Do you have a preference in which tool steel, thickness desired & design? What about handle material? I ask because now when I try to nail down a knife, I think what steel do I really want for that task, then I think about the thickness for the tasks and after that narrows it down a bit more, I look at whats left and ask myself "should I get the cheaper but effective knife and pick up something else too, or do I go for what I REALLY want and pay the bucks"

I usually pay the bucks on my "grail" knives first now, as money always comes and I can get the cheaper a lot quicker later. But that's me and I'm rambling haha.

I'm one of the biggest Fehrman fans out there and own the Extreme Judgment, there's nothing better in it's class, just maybe equals BUT that Busse Bush might hold a bit more value as they seem to over time being that they are limited in their release.

although i do'nt own any ferhmans my research into the forum members opinions plus their use of cpm3v would make this my next choice in the purchase of a 7in or larger blade. the 3v is so shock resistance that if made into an axe it would simply out perform any axe made today. you can check the side load resistance [charpy index] and hardly any other available alloy can be as tough & have greater edge durability. of all the knives discussed i've never seen one negative comment on the ferhmans.

I'd look at one of Matt's Hudson Bay knives;

They run 220-250 depending on handle material.

Check out Horton Knives in the Makers forum.
Get a campblood and then pass it down to your Grand kids( Oh yeah and you can beat the hell out of it ), Jeremy's knives are built to last. And cut like a Laser.

Gotta thow in a huge vote for the browning Crowell/Barker Competition cutter even though it is about a 1/3 of your price. Don't be fooled though it is easily worth 2-3 times the price.

If your not willing to go that inexpensive, check out Bark River Knife and Tool. Their hudson bay camp knife or golok should fit your needs nicely.

Id check out the new Busse Bush whacker mistress. I had mine for a few weeks and really enjoy it

If you need a camp chopper - Granfors Bruks wildlife hatchet. Spend around $70, get a better chopper.
