looking for ideas for reducing shock in my junglas grips. i was thinking about maybe adding rubber liners to the handle or something like that. maybe bike tube or vulcanized rubber liners from one of the knife maker supply sites. anyone done anything like that? thanks.

I use tennis grip tape on choppers that I used a lot. Seemed to help with grip and impact shock.

Bladehq sells some rubber grips made by TUFF1. They're under $20 and come in different colors and patterns, you minght want to check those out. Hope that helps some.

great ideas all so far. thanks guys. never seen those tuff grips before, pretty cool.

Look for 'Sorbothane' rubber. It the stuff they make the Olympic wrestling mats from. You can drop a raw egg on one from chest height and it won't break. It doesn't even bounce! It absorbs most of the impact.

Right now, the cheapest way to get Sorbothan in thin, flat small pieces is to buy "Spenco" brand shoe insoles. Costs about $10 and you can find it in many shoe stores and pharmacies. I've used these inside my shoes for years. I learned about them from a postal worker who walked miles every day. VERY effective. I've wrapped hammer handles and wood splitting mauls with it and it works great! There are MANY different insoles made from Sorbothane today, but 98% of them are contoured for the foot and cost about $30-$40. For wrapping, you need to find the thin flat ones that sell for $10.

Hmm, that stuff looks pretty interesting, I found some sheets of it for under 20 bucks. think i might make some liners with it when my junglas gets back from Big Chris. thanks stitch.

If you decide not to use shoe insoles for liners you could parawrap the handle in 550 cord. Or a nice leather wrap which works as well or better for shock absorption. Either adds a nice customization to the knife and can provide an integral lanyard if you wish.

Another option would be a bicycle inner tube section that will slip tightly onto---OVER---the handle. I know for a BK-2 handle you need a size 12.5 x 1.75 x 2.25 tube. This could be a final step or even an underlayment for a wrap. You could try multiple layers if necessary. I guess you could try it for a liner as well if you wanted to.

Other than that, wrap it in tennis racquet tape or padded bicycle bar tape or cork. Cork can be very good for shock absorption.

A special liner might help but as thin as they would need to be not to alter the grip I think a topical cure would prove more effective.

thats a good point. the cork does seem like the simplest fix. i don't like the feel of the bike tube, i've tried it a few times.
