Bk 9, Esee Junglas, or Scrapyard 911, which is best for a humid environment? Basically which one has the best coating and is less prone to rust?

Thank You

I have no knowledge of the 911 to speak of but I don't think there's much difference as far as corrosion resistance between the BK9 an junglas. The BK9 is 1095CV and IIRC the crovan makes it a little more corrosion resistant than regular 1095. I don't think the coating is going to last too long on any of them with heavy chopping and you'll need to at least oil the edge anyway.

If you don't mind the grivory handles and factory sheath get a BK9. The ESEE is a better value if you want micarta and a kydex sheath.

They're all prone towards rust. Maybe get a stainless Condor machete? They hold up great.

Rust is going to be a wash for the junglas and the ESEE, pretty much. Take care of your gear and it will be a completely moot point, then you can just buy the one that is overall better for your needs, rather than on one criteria. I vote for the junglas, but just to toss another wrench into the gears, look at the ka-bar grass machete as well. I know the finish was a real pain to remove even with a sand blaster, and it's a great tool, too.

You need to look at the Becker or Busse Forum on BF or go to Esee Knives to their forum great user pictures without their coatings and they're looking great...patina but no rust.........besides do you really want a coated knife that will wear off with use

The following are pros and cons in my opinion.....

BK9
Pros:
Price
Aftermarket Modifications
Better at finer tasks (with added choil)

Cons:
Will rust (Carbon Steel)
Sheath is 'meh'
Stock handles are a bit slippery

Esee Junglas
Pros
Longer blade, weighted better for chopping
High quality kydex sheath
Esee Lifetime warranty
Stock Micarta Handles

Cons
Carbon Steel will rust
Not that great for finer tasks

911
Pros
Res-C handles (will help absorb shock when batoning or chopping)
SR-101 Blade (Will rust but hold an edge longer than 1095)
Lifetime Warranty
Thicker blade makes blade heavier for chopping.
Choil is better for finer tasks

Cons
No sheath if you buy it from SYKCO (Someone on the forum could make you a sheath to your specs)

End note: I would go with the 911. I am in the market for a 711 myself :D.

Can't comment on the Becker as I haven't held on to one long enough to test the coating out.

Between the ESEE and the SYKCO it's been my experience that the coating is more durable on the ESEE and 1095 seems to rust a little slower then SR101 but not by enough to make a difference. All that said I live in Oregon and use a 711 with no coating. Just a patina. So the moral of the story, get the one you like best. :D

Edit: Just wanted to add that if you want the best performance from these you should send them off to have the edge thinned. Doing so is pretty cheap and with a custom maker doing the work the blade will be a whole different animal when you get it back.

That is one of the things I thought. The stainless Bolo hasn't let me down yet. If I was worried about rust, that'd be my choice.

Given your choices, I'd get the Junglas, but I've never used the SY personally.

Just wipe whatever you get down after use with some mineral oil. It only takes a few seconds.
