Is there an advantage of a big chopper like the DF or RTAK II over a short machete like a Tramontina bolo or an Ontario 12 inch.Other than the fact that they're just plain cool? :p Was getting ready to order an RTAK II,just trying to justify it to my "boss".I love my 14" tramontina bolo .Made custom leather for it with LCE clips and a file slot on the back, stays on my pack most of the time, just wanted something different for a change.::D

Is there an advantage of a big chopper ...

Yeah if they are made right (proper balance, geometry), the RTAK however isn't. The advantage comes in issues of vibration, versatility, ease of sharpening, edge retention, cutting ability, etc. .

The RTAK (in the right hands) can make a formidable weapon and double as a small machete if need be. Each person may have a different opinion about the use of large choppers, some feeling that an 18inch machete is about all one would ever need, others being more inclined to the heavy bowie style knife such as the DF. It also depends on the level of skill that the user has...I have seen cheap machetes used to chop down large trees. The thin profile of such blades can dig deep and cut with almost 'axe-like' power if the user has proper technique. If prying is on the agenda, one would do better to give consideration to a 1/4 stock or greater. The DF is certainly a knife that can be utilized in multiple roles. A properly sharpened 18 inch machete by Ontario is a cost effective 'race horse' which will leave most bowie knives in the dust with respect to chopping wood. Concrete might be another matter...

As the others have mentioned, the greater strength and thickness of the choppers can be a huge advantage. One thing to consider would be a machete paired with a smaller bladed knife. The large choppers do a mighty fine job of a lot of tasks but are not the best for smaller detailed work, such as skinning and some whittling. Typically a machete will weigh less than a large chopper, while not necessarily being smaller.

I have a Cold Steel Khukri Machete and I'll be honest, not much will out chop it, and I dont' cringe if I miss and hit the dirt or a rock. I like that combined with a 3 1/2" - 4" bladed fixed blade spear point.

Like I said ,just looking for something different.Usually carry a CS Trailhawk and either an old Blackjack 5",my SRK,or a Randall 12 6",that with a sak Tinker and Gerber multitool ,I figure I got my bases covered.Just like big knives.
Cliff, saw your review of the RTAK I ,is the II no better?

Go for a ranger RD7 or 9, comparable to busse's in performance but much cheaper, if you are looking into that RTAK price range.
Justin will customize it and mod it to your any whim, including handle material and finish.
I am new to the choppers my self and my research brought me to rangers, they are very highly regarded and somehow they are still sold at an unbeatable price, but not for long I imagine.

Have not used it, but it would take a pretty serious design to address the issues. It is from Ontario which itself is a pretty serious problem.

Hey Cliff,

Could you shoot me an Email to tell me why the knife being from OKC is a problem? I'm curious about this company but haven't been able to find much feedback about them. Thanks.:D

The quality control is horrible, they are really low end. I have handled about a dozen blades personally, all defective, some of them horrible like ground the wrong way from edge to spine.

Cliff, is this in comparison to a Sebenza by chance? Or some other high end knife?

No, by QC I mean major defects, heat treating, blade grinds being inverted, etc., not cosmetic issues.

I was gonna get an Abaniko. But I think I just changed my mind. Glad I didn't have to find out first hand. Thanks!:D

You can't go wrong with a DogFather. Im also new to big choppers. The only problem is there is a long wait on them. ScrapYard is gonna relase the LE version but its gonna be a little more. I was lucky enough to find out the millatry canceled a few orders so i was able to snag one.

just go to scrapyards forums and keep an eye out. Dan is always keeping every1 informed on blade releases and new models. I just ordered a " Dumpster mutt " its ScrapYards new model.
