chopping ability of BK-5 vs. BK-7?

I've been reading a lot here and so several questions arose in my mind. As long as I'm asking questions to satisfy my curiosity- is there a comparison of these 2? The BK-5 is a lot more "interesting" blade shape, does it have any chopping ability compared to the BK-7?

5 is lighter but longer a tad, and can chop fine... probably not quite as well for pure chopping, but is a better cutter and utility, i think

As a slight threadjack, how does the BK5 balance in the hand compared to the BK7? Being a bit longer and lighter, I'd think they might be close in that regard? Having never even seen a BK5 in real life, I've been wondering about that...

Mmmmmmmm bk5. OK you want the scoop? Here goes.

The bk5 is lighter, full length swedge and all. The bk5 is longer, although cutting edge is roughly the same because of the choil. The bk7 would win with batoning since the spine is mostly flat except that pesky thumb ramp and clip point, but the bk5 batons just fine. It does eat the baton up more but what the heck your gonna burn that anyway right? The bk5 is sharper. Yes it is. Even without a fisking she is still sharper out of the box. The edge is thicker on a bk7. I've owned both so believe me.

The bk5 is my favorite Becker for a reason. Many reasons. Its the MAGNUM CAMP for a reason as well. It kicks arse in the camp. Its my ONE knife. I trust it with everything from skinning and whittling to chopping and batoning and shelter building. Bk5 is where its at.

now get one, all the cool kids are doing it.

I put the 7 slightly above the 5 in chopping, just because of the weight in the blade. I am sure it all falls back to personnel preference though. If you are looking to buy one over the other with the primary purpose of chopping, I would steer you towards the 9, or a different tool. Both can tackle any task you throw at them, but it isn't the optimal option available.

It is a fine blade.
It is hands down the sharpest Becker i have gotten out of the box. I have not had to actually sharpen it yet, just a swipe on each side on a ceramic stick. That was after batoning & feather sticks. I have used it countless times in the kitchen. It still shaves hair.
It is the only stock Becker (so far anyways) with a choil. I loves me a good choil.
It is VERY fast in the hand.
It has a slightly scimitar-ish blade shape.
Your wife/GF will laugh at you when you use it in the kitchen----until SHE uses it.
And yes, all the kids have one nowadays.

So, stop himmin & a hawing over it & get you one, before they go the way of the BK10 or the dodo bird. :D
