Chopping axe

I was out camping the last few days and took my father in-laws axe to chop some firewood. About 100 yards from the campsite we found a tree that was almost half way chopped through and we almost got the tree down with the axe but the head broke off. It was a splitting axe and while I know that chopping down trees isn't what it's made for, I had a nice sharp edge on it so it would do the job.

I'm looking for a nice axe, so that next time around I won't have to worry about this happening. I like the looks of the estwing campers axe with the stacked leather handle, but want something longer like a forest axe that is made for chopping through trees, without having to worry about the head separating from the handle.

If properly hung an axe will stay on its handle for many years with no trouble. And many a so-called 'splitting axe' would function just as superbly as a felling axe. So before you give up on the axe you have you should see if it's worth repairing. What kind of axe is it? Can you post a picture (you'll have to upload it elsewhere on the web and then link the photo here)?

You can fell, buck and split with any decent vintage North American-styled axe. It should have a high centerline (convex cheeks) and a 30" to 36" handle.
