I went to the back yard with my new Munk Cleaver, by Bura 16" OAL, 1/2" spine, 34oz weight Saatisal wood handle. (Note, this is my first HI, it just came along with a UBE)

I also took out my $8 Cold Steel Magnum Kukri and a $15 Kershaw axe (I worked the edge a bit on the latter two)...

I went to work on an old Apricot tree. Recently died, very hard wood, but found what looks like a vein of infestation in the very heart...

1. Magnum Kukri... swong great, but the grip was rough on the hand, and i could tell it is really for softer matter, vines and bush and such. It did not bite very deep,.. but held its own pretty well. No visual damage to edge...

2. Kershaw Axe. Definately bit deeper and harder. Massive swings did not really increase her chop however, so lots of medium effort swings worked best with her. She works decently enough, as a straight tool, but did not give me that 'satisfaction' i was looking for. Grip was decent, edge unaffected, but i did get tired swinging her...

3. Enter the Munk Cleaver. This is one serious piece of hardware. The sweetspot was a bit closer to the grip than you would think... not the outter just before the curve, but just in from there...
No matter how i whacked, she bit in good. Massive power swings or light chops,.. she always dug in proportionally (very satisfying). She also always pulled free easily no matter how deep she went in (not an issue with the other guys, but they never really sank deep enough to test)..
She is heavy, and there was work, but she took it like a champ,... no noticable wear or edge issue. I plan on cleaning her up and making chicken with her tonight...
The only negative, and im not sure about this yet, but it seamed like the grip scales/pannels may have shifted a bit... that would suck if thats the case..

The pics below were 90% all munk cleaver...

Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

The Munk Chunk is a rare-ish cool snag. Liking that one.

Didn't chop anything with the UBE? :p Just paying attention.

To be fair, the CS Magnum Kukri Machete is a machete and not designed to do heavy duty chopping but designed for the conclusion that you came to.

The Cleaver looks nice and looks like it could lay waste to some real estate!

Peace-

The MC is the tactical nuke of my HI collection. There isn't much it won't tackle or destroy. Wood, meat, leather, even went point first thru 14 gauge galv. steel sheet without a problem. The MCC is never very far from my side;) Great snag there, Ironballs.

Great review and nice pics, Ironballs. However, this actually belongs in the Cantina because it includes non-HI items being tested. I (and a number of others here as well) don't agree with this policy but its in place to prevent other product bashing/flame wars, etc, etc.

OK, move it if you must.. I will better mind placement in the future//

Q? What is the diff. between the Munk Cleaver and the Munk Chunk Cleaver and which one do i have? I was told its the MC, but if its a MCC even better-

thanks for the kind words guys..

Same thing:) You see, this design was originally by forum member Cobalt several years ago. It was presented to the kamis and they came up with the Ang Khola Bowie (as seen on the site). While it has always been a beast of a knife, the kamis had missed several of the key points to the bowie in Cobalts design. Fastforward to about a year ago, our forumite Munk wants a straight edge Cobalt bowie for cleaver chores. The kamis actually listen and out comes the 32-35oz monster bowie. So, from the get go it didn't really have a name.
You'll hear it called the Munk Chunk, Munk Cleaver, Munk Chunk Cleaver, Munk/Cobalt Cleaver, MCC, Bullet Bowie, Munk Bullet Bowie, etc etc etc.

The rules? Last I heard, you could mention another product, but if you speced it out too much the article belonged in Knife Review. Now, does that mean a copy could be put in the Cantina, too?

I could say get a lawyer, but we'd need rules to be interpreted first, and I think the enviroment here has become liquid-fluid- ever changing, non constant, if you get the drift.

BUT- that was the best pict of that knife I ever saw, and a really great review.

Always said you could chop your fire wood, build a shelter, prepare your food and maybe even signal to a distant hill point with that cleaver. I smiled when I read you were thinking of preparing the chicken with it later.

there are actual rules? heh

good to know

Nice pictures, thank you Ironballs

Nice review and pictures.

The MC can sure be a beast at chopping. The design of the bowie is such that as soon as I lift it, a smile comes to me.

OK. Glad they're not as draconian as I had thought/feared.

If the Munk Chunk Cleaver ever gets any screen time in a motion picture, I sure hope I see it listed in the credits. :)

Actually, it is a little known fact that the MCC was in a film in the middle of 2006. Sadly, it was given the best-boy credit which it promptly took offense to resulting in the entire cast and crew being chopped up to fish chum. Evil Hollywood being Evil Hollywood made a quick buck selling the footage as Nature Stock for the Discovery Channel production of "When Really Bad Bloody Things Happen". And what became of the crew's remains? Well, lets just say some favors were called in to some high level Motor City Teamsters that took care of that little problem. Hey, those there Lake Fish needs to eat, too, ya know:D

Munk Cleavers don't kill people; people kill people quite handily with munk cleavers, leaving grill-sized chunks.
Where where you on the night of August 16th, 2006, Jake????
