I went to the back yard with my new Munk Cleaver, by Bura 16" OAL, 1/2" spine, 34oz weight Saatisal wood handle. (Note, this is my first HI, it just came along with a UBE)
I also took out my $8 Cold Steel Magnum Kukri and a $15 Kershaw axe (I worked the edge a bit on the latter two)...
I went to work on an old Apricot tree. Recently died, very hard wood, but found what looks like a vein of infestation in the very heart...
1. Magnum Kukri... swong great, but the grip was rough on the hand, and i could tell it is really for softer matter, vines and bush and such. It did not bite very deep,.. but held its own pretty well. No visual damage to edge...
2. Kershaw Axe. Definately bit deeper and harder. Massive swings did not really increase her chop however, so lots of medium effort swings worked best with her. She works decently enough, as a straight tool, but did not give me that 'satisfaction' i was looking for. Grip was decent, edge unaffected, but i did get tired swinging her...
3. Enter the Munk Cleaver. This is one serious piece of hardware. The sweetspot was a bit closer to the grip than you would think... not the outter just before the curve, but just in from there...
No matter how i whacked, she bit in good. Massive power swings or light chops,.. she always dug in proportionally (very satisfying). She also always pulled free easily no matter how deep she went in (not an issue with the other guys, but they never really sank deep enough to test)..
She is heavy, and there was work, but she took it like a champ,... no noticable wear or edge issue. I plan on cleaning her up and making chicken with her tonight...
The only negative, and im not sure about this yet, but it seamed like the grip scales/pannels may have shifted a bit... that would suck if thats the case..
The pics below were 90% all munk cleaver...
