Does anybody here have any experience chopping through ice with an axe? Is there any danger of damaging the axe?

I have chopped a lot of holes for ice fishing at first ice until it gets too thick to use my axe and other than the fact that you will get a little surface rust if not cleaned, there should be no ill efects.

Thanks Bob. Say, now that you mention it, how thick can ice get before it becomes impractical to use the axe?...and what do you use after that?

When the handle hits the ice then i switch to a ice chisel then later in the season when the ice gets thicker i use an ice auger.
