Chosera stones?

This past week was my first run with Arkansas stones (Lanksy system) and I noticed that the resulting edge was more refined. It cut paper so much more easily compared to the edges I've sharpened with synthetic stones.

Anyway, I am planning to spring for a KME system this Christmas. I want to get the diamond kit and maybe a few extra stones such as black Arkansas for honing after the diamonds, and possibly a Chosera for polishing after the black Arkansas.

I've never used water stones before, so I'd like to ask those who have if these are worth getting for further refinement of an edge? The most modern steels I have now are CPM 154 and S35VN but the majority are 1095. I have a single D2 knife as well.

These are all folding knives, most of them traditional pattern.

Chosera stones are top of the line waterstones, they will quickly surpass the speed and effectiveness of nearly all other stones. The hard black Arkansas wouldn't fit well into a progression and would only slow down the sharpening. Doesn't mean you can't still use it but a 5k and 10k Chosera will both apply a finer edge.

They are about equal, a little different in feel and consistency of stone but in the same class of premium stones. IMO the Shapton stones are great for everyday sharpening while the Chosera stones are ideal for the professional that needs more from a stone. That's not to say one cannot start with professional grade stones, it's actually better to start with the best, saves you time trying to learn on low grade stones that require more skill to use.

Jason hit the nail on the head.

If you do choose to go on with choseras after the initial gold diamonds drop down to a coarse chosera. Even something as coarse as the 400 or 600. That will make getting out diamond scratches much easier. From there you can go through a progression going as high as you like.

Shaptons and Choseras are both fast stones. The shaptons are going to be a touch faster , harder and can go slightly finer with the 30k. But many prefer the feedback of the choseras.

There are also Nubatama Stones that are worth mentioning. Jason is having success with the150 , 1k and 4k. For a guided system i would probably add a 2k in there as well.

If its available fullsize you can have it made for the WEPS , EP or KME , you need only to speak with the right people.

Good to know

I'm not familiar with that particular sharpening system. However I have Chosera stones for an Edge Pro; they worked quite well on any steal I throw at them.
Typically, the better the steel the better you can make the edge.

Good to know I can skip black Arkansas. So if I was going with the diamond set and had money to add just three of the Choseras, which grits do you recommend I get?

Also, do I need to get a flattening stone of some sort for the Choseras?
