I am just wondering if any of you folks have seen any of Chris Petrilli's DVD's such as Crashing the Lines, Cutting the Lines, or The Secrets of Pangamont that are available from Paladin Press. I notice one of the forum members has one for sale on EBay. I have thought of purchasing Petrilli's material, as least Paladin usually has high production values from what I have seen. But I am just wondering if anyone has any input on this material.

Thanks

I have his tape taken at the Wind&Rock camp, also available through Paladin. He is very nice guy with a good on camera appearance, and his skills are excellent. In this particular tape he managed to put quite a lot material in 90 minutes, including siniwali drills, disarms, locks and lock counters.
Now I do not know about the tapes you asked... Personally I'm also interests in his Pagamot series, as the other two I think might be locking-oriented, which is not exactly what I'm looking for.

Actually all three series focus on locks and throws. I found all three series to be excellent and think that they're a worthwhile purchase - especially if you're interested in Cacoy Doce Pares. There's a wealth of information in each series although I think it likely that Mr. Petrilli shows just the tip of the iceburg. "Cutting the Lines" focusses on what Mr. Petrilli calls "compression locks" between the stick and the ulnar bone of his forearm:

I had the pleasure of meeting Cacoy a couple of years ago and even at 80+ years of age he basically owns you at this range. I found his style to be an interesting counterpoint to the one that I practice, which is what got me interested in Mr. Petrilli's series. I think that Mr. Petrilli probably adds something of a Silat flavor to Cacoy's Judo and Aikido influenced "Eskrido" blend of locks and throws. One thing that Mr. Petrilli makes clear is that the techniqes shown take place only after the opponent has been softened up with strikes and the techniques are not "looked for" but "just happen." Of course that means that you need a lot of partner work to pull them off at speed - which is the reason for looking at and analysing these DVD's. For what it's worth, my teacher saw Cacoy disarm a well-regarded eskrimador in Cebu in the '80's three times in as many minutes during a friendly sparring match. The disarms just came out of the blue.

The "Pangamot" series also shows locks and throws from the perspective of empty hand vs. stick and empty hand vs. empty hands. At about $70 it's a great value from Paladin Press.

I agree completely with Steve Lamade. In addition, the quality of the videos is excellent and Mr. Petrilli does a great job of explaining the things he is doing. As Hetman mentioned however, the series I saw (Crashing the Lines) is very locking/joint compression oriented, and so if you are looking for material specifically on that it is great.

I have the videos and they are very well done with multiple angles and in slow motion. This is of course just the tip of the iceburg and a lot of it is some of the older stuff GM Cacoy teaches. Cacoy Doce Pares is so complex that you have to constantly learn the subleties he teaches and even then you miss out on a lot. I train about 3 hours a week with his masters and when GM returns I train with him as well. Petrilli uses a lot of silat as that is what he has added. At 87 years old GM's knees aren't what they used to be so you don't see him moving in that way. GM allows change as it is only then that you can work the moves and counter moves.

I really like the videos and refer back to them as often as possible to look for other things to work on. Hope it helps
