Chris Reeve Hollow Handle question

Would anyone have any idea if the Chris Reeve Mountaineer I, Shadow III or Aviator can hold a compass in the removable butt cap? These are the smaller hollow handle knives with an OAL of 8" and the butt-cap seems kind a small to allow a compass. Then again, I'm sure that there's a compass out there small enough that I can epoxy into the removable cap.

Any ideas?

Thank you! :D

You might be able to find a button compass that would fit in there, but my big question is whether the compass would continue to function after being stored near metal like that for very long. My take on it is there's better ways to carry a button compass than in the metal handle of a knife.

I wouldn't doubt that a compass would continue to function. Of course, I'm basing this assumption on how Randall installs the compass in the butt cap of their model 18s.

I've yet to find a button compass that will fit in my Shadow IV butt cap, not to say that one isn't out there.

Hi, guys. Thanks for your help so far.

How about the 5.5" blade versions like the Mk VI, Mountaineer II, Sable IV, Shadow IV.

Any idea what size compass is going to fit in your Shadow IV butt cap? What's the inside diameter if you don't mind me asking.

I have the mountaineer II and the small button compass fits in just fine. I think I got it out of a survival kit. Dont know what kind it is. I will have to look and get back to you.

Tadgear has one they epoxy into a whistle cap, it's small enough to fit and they sell it separately.

The one I got was from Randall knives for their 18's. it fits in the buttcap exactly. Since the model 18 buttcap is brass and the CR one is aluminum, both are nonferrous and do not prevent a compass from working properly.

Hi

Maybe you can find something useful here:

Which size is applicable I have no idea, however I inquiered about their grading system, and they answered:
"Regarding our compass capsules, please note we have three types - Grade AA, Grade A, and Grade B:
Grade AA is liquid filled, highly luminous (8-hour luminosity) and has a working temperature range of -20 degrees F to 120 degrees F. It is water resistant to 100 feet or 30 m. Highest quality pivot-pin and bearing for smoothest movement!

Grade A is liquid filled, luminous (1-hour luminosity) and has a working temperature range of -10 degrees F to 110 degrees ! F. It is water resistant to 30 feet or 9 m.

Grade B is a dry compass, luminous and has a working temperature range of -10 degrees F to 110 degrees F. It is not water resistant."
