how come all of his fixed blade knives have a 55-57 rock well hardness? does this mean that they are poorly heat treated becase is'nt a-2 steel generally really hard .

If you ask this on the CRK forum, you may even get Chris or Anne Reeve to answer it :) But I believe the usual response from them is for ease of resharpening in the field and without overhardening to the point of brittleness. These knives are for hard work, not shaving forearm hair.

Check CRK'w web site. This explains it all.

From the above captioned page and mirrors what Esav said:

" All the one piece knives are hardened to 55-57 RC and random checks are made to ensure accuracy. This hardness gives superb toughness, good edge retention and allows for efficient sharpening in the field. "

"The one piece design offers the highest possible weight/strength ratio.
A2 Tool Steel offers excellent edge retention and good shock resistance.
Hardness at between 55 and 57 Rockwell C is not brittle but gives good edge retention along with ease of sharpening. "
