So, as with all my threads I have to start out with a very long and boring story.. But this one is kind of interesting IMHO. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by one of our friends and fellow CRK enthusiast Ryan (Brendtech189) about a Large Sebenza he had recently acquired. Now if any of you have had the pleasure of dealing with Ryan you would know that like me he gets very excited when he finds what he considers a unique or rare CRK.. At one time (not that long ago) Ryan had the pleasure of owning some very rare and unique pieces of CRK history (you may recall the original post) and I being new to CRK after doubting the validly of his collection did a little (ok a lot) of what we call "eating crow" but as it turned out I ended up with a couple of the knives in his very impressive collection and passed on a couple that I still regret. Anyway so Ryan sends me and e-mail telling me that he had just acquired this Early Large Sebenza BG-42 that appeared to be in near mint condition!! This of course got my attention.. :D
The story of the knife as related to me is this..
Ryan has a cousin who lives in Canada and while visiting a resort in Saskatchewan discovered this knife in a gift shop!! Apparently the knife had been sitting there for the last 17 years!! So after a couple of e-mails and pictures provided to me by Ryan I ended up with this beautiful example of a fairly early Large "Regular" Sebenza with a BG-42 Blade. :D
And now the rest of the story as it relates to "What's in a box.. If you noticed the box appears to be too early for the knife.. but if you look closer at the box you will notice that although it has the earlier CRK Logo inked on the lid.. it also has the later cutout for ease of opening. Hmmm. So is it the original box for the knife?? Both Ryan and I think so only because of the condition of the box, the condition of the paperwork and of course the knife inside. You be the judge.
All the best, Dave

P.S. IF ANY OF YOU WANT TO LOAD THE PICTUERS IN TO THIS THREAD PLEASE DO!! I STILL HAVE NOT FIGURED IT OUT..

Wow! Congrats again my friend on another great score. You amaze my with your detective work hunting down CRK's. I love that blade shape and I hope to one day own a blade like that. You need to do a complete shot of all your knives! That would be incredible.... Oh yeah almost forgot to say how I enjoyed your story.

Beautifull knife.
I am waiting for one similar but younger than your. It is from 1999

Yes, it is amazing where CRKs will show up. I was just as surprised as anyone else would be when their cousin whom does not know the difference between a Sebenza and a butter knife, lol, calls you and says that he found an old Sebenza in a gift shop. But I think it is also important to point out that the knife is dated from 1997 and that also just happens to be the date that they started making the U shaped cutouts on the boxes, with sticker or without. So, initially I or we, had presumed that it was an old box that had been found and just used by CRK as at the time they were making the change from the Originals to the Regulars but who knows how many other boxes from that time period just might have an old style CR logo under their new style sticker? That is a theory anyways. I'm glad you are enjoying the knife and if anyone has a Large Regular BG-42 with a birthdate earlier than Mar. 27th, 1997 please post up a pick as I am trying to figure out the earliest known Large BG-42 Sebenza to exist and that is the earliest date that I have found known to exist. Thanks and to all take care.

Thanks again Ryan!! For the beautiful knife and your intense dedication to the history of "This thing of ours".
All the best, Dave

Ryan is a good guy, I've enjoyed dealing with him as both a seller and a buyer. He's also good to just shoot the breeze with.

Glad that fine blade found its way into your collection Dave, seems like a very fitting home for such a nice piece of CRK history. If you ever get sick of it or it's crying out to be used ever gets annoying just give me a call ;D

Very Very Nice Dave! And an interesting story to go along with it, you know me, I'm a sucker for a good story. Take care brother.

As always thank you very much Rich!! And yes Ryan is one of the good guys!! Like you and I he has a love for this thing of ours called CRK!!

Hi, I just saw this post. I have a CRK large Sebenza in the box with a 1984-1997 13th year sticker and card dated 2-20-97 BG-42. My box has no cut out. I'm not allowed to post pics. Thanks

If you ever want to part with that knife, please let me know. I've been looking for one with that date.

Wow. My large BG-42 Regular is within a week or two of yours, IIRC. Need to dig out the box and check.
